Im having a little dilemma right now. To sell for parts or to repair?
I found a Sony Bravia KDL-32S5100 LCD TV at the junkyard. Its looked pristine, not a scratch on it. It has the Stand but no remote.
This is a 32" 1080p 60hz tv. I realized it probably was there for a reason but I still put it in my truck without hesitation.

So I got home and powered it, the problem was then revealed, looks like someone punched the screen. Despite the broken panel it looks like everything else is functionnal, I could browse through the menus and all.

I took the TV appart and realized that there is potential resell value for the PSU board and Main board on ebay. I could maybe get 50-75$ for selling those.
But then I found the part number of the LCD panel, and found a second hand replacement panel ( marked in excellent condition ) that I could get for avout 125$ shipped.

    So what would you do:
    1. Sell the parts and dump that carcass.
    2. Buy the replacement LCD and repair the set and get a Sony 32" Full hd tv for 125$ ( Provided everything goes as expected.. )

*Take note that I currently Dont have a LCD TV, Im still using SD CRT monsters. So I do not know much about those new TVs, would you say this model is a good set? Its from 2009.

Personally I would just buy a new TV.
    Non-Sony of course.
A new 32 inch model goes for about $250 these days.

The only 32" thing ive seen new for 250$ are no-name brand 720p tv.
Is there a reason to not buy a Sony flat screen TV?

I'd attempt repair, but that's the technical side of me talking. In reality I'd probably just buy a new one :)

    Repair it, go on! :D

Sony makes wonderful TV's. Not all of them are top notch, but definitely not a no name brand. For $125 i would go for it.

I would just sell the parts and save up for a newer, better TV. For one thing, very often when you buy replacement panels, unless you buy directly from the manufacturer, they end up being much lower quality than the original panel. The other thing is, this TV isn't exactly state of the art. LED-backlit TVs offer significant improvements in brightness and picture clarity over older CFL-lit displays, which I believe is what this display is. It really makes quite a difference visually, and they're also thinner and use less power.

Thanks for all the inputs so far.

Just to clarify a few things, This is not really about whether to fix this or buy a new one. If i decide to scrap it, I wont be buying a new one instead.

I seriously get most of my stuff by repairing junkyard finds. I see it as a greener way of living and do this not only by principle but it is also economical and I like doing it.

My moto is usually to give stuff a second chance when it is worth it. I either fix stuff then keep it or sell it, or sell the parts, or sometimes I will even clean stuff do minor repairs then give it to goodwill.

Its just that in this specific case Im having a hard time tracing the line.

Are you willing to take the hit if it doesn't quite work out with the replacement panel? $125 is quite a bit of money. Even though the replacement is marked as excellent, what if it isn't or has problems... or the TV develops other problems once you fit it?

On the flip side, if it does work out then you'd have a bargain HD TV and the satisfaction of saving something that can be used.

I do admire your ethos on repairing and reusing things <would insert the thumbs up smiley if smileys were still on here>

Well, if everything else is good as far as you can see, and you're willing to bargain, i'd say go for it! I've had quite a few tv's that were broken and just needed some capacitor replacements and began working. As far as LCD replacement's, i've never done a TV, but i'm guessing it would be like a laptop or phone but on a much larger scale! If you do though, get a paper with you and mark the screws as you remove them so you don't mix anything up. Good luck either way :)

I don't dumpster/junkyard dive myself, but apart from that's an attitude I can totally get behind. I almost always keep my stuff until it's broken beyond repair, or at least until I find a good home for it where I know it'll be useful.

If the repairs don't work out he could sell off the panel again, maybe at a slight loss but nothing too bad. Me, I'd probably try the repair.

Sell all the mother/daughter boards from the TV on ebay, people buy them. Finding used/working HDTV boards is often difficult.

I had only found no-name brands for these prices. But it does seem like you have somewhat better deals on Tvs in the US than here in Canada.
Amazon.com deals are usually not available in canada and everywhere else I dont seem to find those prices for name brand.
Or maybe I do not know where to look.

But still, even at those good price, its still about 3x more than the part to repair the set I have.

Sony has seemed to develop most of the home video technology for the last 15 years. just look at the new oled 4k pvm's

I believe the ladder may be something like this now
    Sony
    LG
    Samsung
    Toshiba

this one is beyond fubar and any repair attempts will result in higher cost than buying a new one for quite sure.

I don't see an initial price tag but if it was free to start with and a new panel can be found for a decent price one might be able to flip it on Craigslist for a small profit.
