I got this XDK for 50$ and it seems to be a pre-release model (not an XeDK but it is pre-release with dash 1873.) I wonder if this sidecar could be used on a released devkit out of curiosity, dont really want to remove it knowing now its a pre-release console (it was already opened once before me, the seal is already gone so I didnt feel bad even opening it) Nothing really special other then some tech demos, no games or anything.
Very cool man, nice XDK launcher version To answer your question, all sidecars with the two ports (before the XNA kits) all work on every kit
Ah good. Maybe if i ever feel like using it on my Demo Kit, but idk I want to keep it the way it is for collective sake. I was in the process of updating it to a newer one after backing up the NAND but found out that it wont update to 21173.1 (Notices its early release console and refuses to update). So I guess I'm keeping it this way and using it as a decorative piece . I still got my Xenon Demo Kit for deving on.
Sidecar won't work on your demo kit. If it's a true demo kit, it will be missing the sidecar 10w 2 pin power connection on the motherboard. Stress, reviewer and demo kits lack these. Only dev and test kits have them.
I remember seeing a demo kit that had the extra ports for a sidecar,it was a 05 demo kit if I remember correctly.
Id hate to see an older kit like this updated, always cool to see beta dashes running as they are intended to be.
Demo, reviewer and stress will have the extra ports like the nand contacts. Sometimes referred to the sidecar ports or stress cable ports. The sidecar power port is almost never on anything beside dev or test kits. Now, with that being said, Microsoft always likes to mess about with the traditional rules and will reuse dev and test boards and reissue them for demo kits. It's rare but it does happen.
You can try to patch the default.xex of "XDK recovery images", so you can install it on pre-release hardware. If you like I can write a small guide and you can give a try.
I am leaving it as it is. I don't want to hack a new dash on it knowing its a pre-release unit. Is this a common beta version or less common? If anything I might put the sidecar on a different unit, but even that I might not do. The header for the sidecar is there, just not the actual connector. It is possible to add the connectors to demo kits. They are just XDK boards without the header connectors soldered on. I am curious on this, even tho I will probably not do this on this particular console, I'd still like to know how its done lol.
