With gamergate, all the hate with a very large portion on the industry's community and in some cases the people who aren't haters but rant that "we are the consumers" due to society! we deserve not to have bugs in our games!" (in some cases they are right but not all), lack of good games from triple a companies, and lack powerful consoles (not including the wii u nintendo has made some good choices but i'm not denying that from outside saving themselves if this industry falls they have made very bad choices) because sony and microsoft don't want their consoles to be too expensive or lose allot of money by doing what sony did with the ps3.

i could of talked allot deeper in those reasons but please comment on what you think also i may make a thread of how will the industry save itself in the next day or so.

Won't happen. Gaming is far too popular and there's new gamers pretty much every day nearly.

Pretty much. I can certainly see consumers losing faith in products causing big changes in how we consume, but games are far too popular in general on casual platforms such as smart devices and tablets that there'll always be a market for software developers to target their games to. Back then people still weren't sold on the idea and you had big executives making bad decisions, now days games are widely accepted and the hardware isn't limited allowing people to create fantastic experiences no matter what device. We still have the big executives screwing things up however, so I could imagine a big switch where first party companies like Sony and Microsoft get out of the console business, but for the games market as a whole to crash, it wouldn't happen it has too much steam.

Don't forget that the game crash was only in the US, not the world. Anyway, as mentioned there won't be another games crash since its way too big. Sales may dip but there won't be a full on stop.

There may be a crash in mobile gaming, but I think it'll take a while.

What I see is like all economics: on top, you have the richest (AAA titles), on bottom, you have the poorest (indies) and nothing between.

The whole "gamergate" thing is really only a small, but vocal, minority of gamers (a demographic that could vary wildly in the first place, does the commuter who plays a few rounds of Candy Crush on the bus count as a "gamer"? He/She plays a game, maybe more, but doesn't own a console or gaming PC). Yes it's gotten to be a big thing, but millions of people who are either unaware or don't care are going to Gamestop or Steam or whatever and buying games.

As for the "underpowered consoles", consoles have never been equal in power to a top-tier PC in terms of raw specs. The difference has always been that while a computer has to run a bunch of things simultaneously (the OS, the drivers for everything, any programs you have open or in the background, etc), a console has, until the last gen, only run the game, and maybe an OS outside of the game, but until the 360, the OS was only accessible by resetting the console.

It's certainly true that the 'video game crash' didn't effect the UK. I was a gamer in England at the time, and the crash was barely mentioned there, and those of us who gamed (which was almost exclusively on home computers) didn't hear about it at all, I think. Certainly I never heard about it and none of my friends mentioned it. Yet to listen to American reports (either from the time, or modern write ups) you'd think the whole thing was a world-wide calamity.

If they're passionate about their games, I doubt they're going anywhere.

Isn't/wasn't there talk of console games jumping up to $70? It really is getting a bit absurd.

Considering the inflation of the dollar and how much we pay for video games, it really isn't. There has only been one big jump, from $50 to $60, since I've been buying games. Considering other industries and how they handle pricing adjustments, we're really not in that bad of shape.

As soon as I saw the thread, I thought the same as about everyone else: not going to happen. I don't forsee it happening unless there's a total technological breakdown. Its like asking if the film industry is just going to dry up. The great crash happened with virgining technology. Not the case in today's climate.

Eh, used 7th gen games are getting cheap, and will keep getting cheaper as stores try and get rid of stock. Now may not be the best time to buy, but it's getting close.

I remember there was a scare when the pre-orders for 8th gen systems had games at $100, but it was just a placeholder price because the publishers hadn't posted prices officially. Plus I've seen EB ads from the 90s with Genesis and SNES games new for anywhere from $50-$80, and with inflation, that's around $100 in today's money. And of course with PC gaming, you can have a huge library of games that you pay far far less than retail for.

I don't think it will crash, it can and will plateau (sp?) but it will not crash.

I mean the PS4/XBone and Wii-U I think it on it's way to doing that. They just released after the last generation lasted about 10 years and then they still couldn't do 1080p / 60FPS consistently.

Heh yeah, quite true. At least wages somewhat match the prices of games in the states, but here, wages are low but prices are high.
