Actually, this seems to be a VCD player containing a Mega Drive clone, so the CD he's looking for would have MD ROMs on it, in some proprietary format. AFAIK these devices usually shipped with one or two such CDs and no way to make new ones.

I was in the same situation as user maxuma, but through the powers of the internet I found a Chinese market place with a vendor selling collections of Xin Tianli VCD games. Here's the website URL & the page for the VCD games that I bought:
    http://www.yoycart.com/Product/19458980736/
I'll post an update when they come in and I have had a chance to test them.

Regardless of the legality of the original product, don't ask people to pirate games for you. If the discs were sold in China, you can post a WTB thread (want to buy). If you're just looking for pirated games, look on the Internet - that's not what this forum is about.

I believe someone has now provided you with a link to purchase CDs.

With those sega marked chips on there it does make a pretty legit impression.

Right - in which case, the CDs would have been copyrighted.

However, it sounds strange that Sega would approve an emulator with so many games.

    Bit more info here

It was a way for Sega of Japan to get into the highly competitive consumer market in China & Taiwan. The VCD format was the predominant media used at the time because it was cheaper then DVD and would then be cheaper for the consumer. I believe that the VCD game discs would have been packaged with the player at the time of purchase, but I have seen some images of them on another forum and the ones I purchased look very similar. For all I know they are new old stock that some guy had in his warehouse who used to work be a manufacturer/distributor for Xin Tainli. [IMG]

I have a number of famiclone VCD players. Probably a little less legit than this device. The disks are VCDs with ROMs in some non standard format. I'd be curious to know if they did the same thing with these discs or they're in a format more friendly to making your own discs with your own set of ROMs.

I was able to order the VCDs from China and was informed that they shipped a week ago, so as soon as I get them I'll test them out and post an update. A buddy of mine is going to borrow the player & VCDs to make a more in depth video about the ins & outs of this thing, so when that's available I'll post a link to it as well.

The VCD game discs finally arrived from China and they actually worked.
I haven't tried all the discs, but disc 1 worked on the first try.
I'll have a video up soon about it and then a buddy of mine will do a more in depth video if anyone is interested in any of that I'll post the links to the videos when they become available.
The process to buy these VCD game discs wasn't easy and the photo on their store doesn't match what I got, but they do work and only cost about $30 USD.

Did you try sticking the CDs in your PC to see how they are formatted/laid out? I'd assume whatever weirdness they did wouldn't be too complex. If it play MP3 files off CDs (which I've seen a lot of 2000s era VCD players do) it may be pretty easy to make your own discs. But obviously there is some level of menuing that goes on.

I also saw your video on this and came across the thread here, thanks for sharing. That holo sticker on the back is pretty sweet looking.

Hi.I duplicate my message from the topic: https://assemblergames.com/threads/...ive-educational-software-plays-backups.57853/ here.
Recently I learned about the existence of VCD with support for Sega games. Discussion in the Russian forum:http://www.emu-land.net/forum/index.php/topic,72558.0/all.html#lastPost.
I began to actively seek information about such systems and came across your post. Then I found a patent for such VCD-MD: https://www.google.com/patents/CN1102288C?cl=en&hl=ru

I'm especially interested in the SegaMD card - it's made on the HAWK SSHK315-03 controller, which chip of 315-5969 or 315-6123 is used? It will be great if you can make good photos of the internal device of your VCD.

How do you think: SM188 is approximately equal to SSHK315-03 ?
