The TGM games are very tuned for high speed play, and thus there are several features that help you cope with, and even push you into, higher speed. 1. Each of the 7 different pieces have a unique sound that help you identify the next piece. When you got this pegged you can "feel" the gameplay in a whole new way - you're using more of your senses for the game. 2. Hard drop does not lock the piece and you have a few frames to adjust the piece, slide and rotate into overhangs, etc. Then you can manually lock the piece when you're happy with your placement by pushing down. 3. There are three rotation buttons. A, B and C are layed out as counter-clockwise, clockwise and counter-clockwise. This means you can slam A quickly followed by C to perform a double rotation move. Amazingly, Jin8 (as seen in the GM video linked above) does not seem to use this att all, and you can see that it slows him down at some points. He's still the best though. 4. ARE and the Initial Rotation/Hold System. After putting down a piece there is a delay of a few frames before the next piece spawn (the number of frames decrease as you progress to higher levels in the game). This is called ARE (from the japanese word for "that thing", I'm not making this up), and during ARE you can hold down buttons so that the piece will spawn rotated to your preference, instant hold or even initiate instant DAS. 5. DAS is short for Delayed Auto Shift, which is the equivalent of Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate for keyboards on computers. If you hold down your stick it'll move one step first, but then quickly it'll start shifting very fast towards that direction. If you hold down the stick during ARE it will remove the delay and start shifting fast as soon as the piece spawns. 6. Torikan, during the game there are checkpoints. If you don't reach a certain level within a given timeframe the game will come to an early end. It'll push you into playing faster. I'm sure I am forgetting something, but these are all things you have to master to cope with the speed in the game. Another thing to remember that the Master Mode (as discussed in this thread) is not even the fastest mode, there's an even faster mode called Shirase. Sadly I do not have a video of Jin8 playing Shirase, but here's a video of another player reaching level 1300 and the S13 rank - this is the highest level and rank that we know of in Shirase this far, but Mihara has hinted that it's possible to go even further. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zt2umIhuTD4
Now that's a reply! Much appreciated. Even though it's a bit much to grasp for a non-initiated like me, the explanations are very well written. Impressive!
Tetris DS is broken Barc0de. Don't think you're so high and mighty because of Tetris DS. http://the-inbetween.com/archives/000502.php << explaination there.
That's not all there is to it though, the real breaker in Tetris DS is the randomizer. Tetris DS uses what we're calling a 7bag system, there are 7 different pieces in Tetris and this randomizer plays them all before heading to the next bag. This means that the game is predictable - and you can stack with that in mind. The endless rotation might help less skilled players to cope with the speed at higher levels, but it's not the main reason to why the game is broken.
Wow. Thats very interesting to know. I guess I never really payed enough attention to notice that!
So, what is a good portable Tetris besides the original GB one? I'd like to pick up a copy of the Wonderswan version...
Why are you lying? The T-spin triple is a quirk of SRS based games, it's present in Tetris Zone, Tetris Evolution and (I think) Tetris Online Japan to name a few.. While the T-spin triple does seem like a weird move it doesn't make the game broken - nor is it in any way an unintended move. Tetris DS even gives you bonus points for performing it. Broken would imply that it is an unintended move and that it makes the game easier than intended - in fact, it's a pretty difficult move to incorporate into play because it takes rigorous planning. The singleplayer section is definitely broken - there's no challenge to it and anyone with patience can max it out at 99,999,999 as it just doesn't get harder after level 20. No real skill involved. Tetris DS does, on the other hand, have a pretty good multiplayer component, and it's definitely one of the best Tetris games that you can play online. In multiplayer it's much harder to plan ahead even if the randomizer is predictable, the endless rotation is not present while playing against others and the twists doesn't make the game unfair or broken in any way. In fact, advanced players have incorporated them into play adding a little bit of extra depth for the game online. It's just something you have to accept - or play another version of Tetris. Don't knock it because it's different.
