Hmm from the looks of things it seems Dreamshell is having trouble recognizing the iso because of the filename (Dreamshell seems to have a problem with sdiso's that have any spaces in their filenames) try renaming RECV CD1.iso to something like RECVCD1.iso or just RECV1.iso and see if that fixes the problem.

If you're going to ask a question that pertains to piracy, you could, at the very least try to hide it, and don't link to it...

Can you at least "see" the SD card from inside Dreamshell? That's often a chore in and of itself, as the SD compatibility is terrible.

The problem with Dreamshell 4.0 RC1 is that while it's far more stable than release 4.0, almost all of those iso's you DL from iso-zone are configured for the older release. They will not work on RC1, which I found out the hard way.

There is a specific user who converted compatible RC1 files on that site, but I can't remember who it was. You should try Beta 4 instead, although I don't remember what issues that one has itself.

I attempted to convert my own SD-ISO's using absoutely putrid instructions on the SWAT forum, and it wouldn't work. Honestly, the whole Dreamshell experiment deserves an F for SWAT, really not a good application.

If the video the OP posted is anything to go by I'm pretty sure the OP can "see" the SD card in Dreamshell.
That actually is a possibility, maybe RECV is one of the sdiso's that still hasn't been released for RC1 compatibility.
Maybe the game you did was confirmed not working in the SDISO compatibility list what game was you doing?
Personally I think that's a bit harsh, I mean sure Dreamshell is far from being perfect but when you take into consideration that Dreamshell is being developed by only a few people (in fact it might even be a one man show for all I know), for what we've got so far Dreamshell is actually a fairly decent application once you figure out how to use it.

Then he's lucky because the SD adapter is extremely picky with what SD card it will work with.

    There's a compatibility list?

I had a difficult time even getting homebrew or arcade ports to run on it. Anyhow, if things didn't work, that's fine. But for me the biggest issue is the total lack of documentation, it's appalling really. There's no concrete guide to creating your own SD-ISO's in RC1, and seems like everyone who gets the SD adapter is on one forum or another trying to understand where to put the files on the SD card. That alone took me weeks, yes weeks of one and off trial and error. The SWAT site/forum is mostly in Russian, and not helpful.

One way to fix that would be to open the source up so others can help. At the very least, they could comply with the license of the library its built on (KallistiOS), but they don't.

KallistiOS is supplied under the BSD license, so there is no requirement to release the source of applications built against it - or even the source of any modifications you make to it. The only thing you have to do is include a credit somewhere in the program, and I'm pretty sure I saw that in the Dreamshell help.

KOS is supplied under the KOS license, which is a modified BSD license. All source and binary distributions must include the KOS copyright notice. Dreamshell does not have a "help" section with the exception of the help command at the console, which only lists the available commands. The Region Changer app does have a credits screen but does not display the copyright notice and doesn't mention or credit KOS. Lawrence, the main author of KOS for the past 8 years or so, is a close friend of mine and an admin at my website (DCEmulation) and has complained about this to me personally. Given that Dreamshell has been in development since 2004, at this point in my opinion it is pretty much a slap in the face to the KOS authors that there is no credit given. Sadly, even most of the commercial indie Dreamcast releases don't credit KOS properly. Dan, Lawrence, and the rest of the KOS contributors have put in countless hours of programming into KOS over the years and it is largely responsible for the success the Dreamcast has had with hobbyists and indie games.

Lawrence has even tried to make it easy with kos_get_authors() and kos_get_license() functions available to assist in printing the license and authors information. Even still, most programs still don't give credit.

OK, I didn't realize that - the thing is that I did know that Dreamshell was based on KOS, so I wonder where I found that out from? I just assumed it was in the docs somewhere, and I must have read it.

    maybe: try another image.

also - the length of wires between dc and sd-mod is quite long. i remember advice to make it almost w/o any wires.

Yes, like I said, use Beta 4 and I think most SD-ISO's on iso-zone should work to some degree. Did you get any game to work?

It's not as if SWAT keeps it a secret, though. He's responded to inquiries about Dreamcast development on his forums promoting the use of KOS over Katana, for example, and has mentioned that Dreamshell uses it. When getting help on certain commands in Dreamshell (the flashrom command, for example), the command does plainly state that the command is basically a frontend for flashrom_read(), flashrom_write(), etc. functions in kallistios.

Surely there are more egregious license violations than not giving credit where credit is due, but I still think it is a major disrespect to those who drive Dreamcast development behind the scenes, unnoticed and uncredited.

I own a Dreamshell dongle and think its a waste of time and effort. Compatibility sucks and its not worth the hassle of finding compatible isos or converting them, as half the time they don't work or run slow (due to the serial port on the DC)

I personally recommended using the Dreamcast NULLdc 1.04 emulator if your'e pc is up to a decent spec, as the compatibility is excellent and can be played in 1080P. Regards to piracy, its not a supported system anyone (dead for a good number of years) and all commercial games are non-profitable, except for the indie games like Sturmwind. The isozone site would not host them otherwise, so ignore what people say.

It's not up for interpretation, I am not trying to play morality police here, but quite simply linking to ISOs of commercially released software is against the rules of the site. They are here if you need to read them again.
