    Hi all,

I recently acquired an SCPH-10000 PlayStation 2. It works (somewhat), however there are many things that need rectifying (I'm unsure the last one can be, but it's worth a shot). The disc drive motor does not have sufficient power to allow the disc tray to come out all the way, resulting in it trying to come back in again (it requires assistance by pulling very lightly on the tray to stop the light from blinking. It makes it believe it has gone all the way out), the laser may be on its way out. It takes approximately 30 seconds to 1+ minute to read a disc. And the final one, it's a very strange one (I'm unsure if anyone else has had this problem). When you place a disc in the console, it'll work and play the game, however after 1 minute, it shuts down automatically for no apparent reason. Can anyone lead me in the right direction as this particular model number PlayStation 2 I've been trying to get for years seems like it's ended in failure. It's a March 4, 2000 launch model with the DVD Utility Disc version 1.00 (has no version number).

    Kind regards,

Bump. I managed to get the system to operate properly for more than a minute now (I haven't done a single thing to it), now it will operate for 11 minutes before shutting down randomly (and when you switch it on after it shuts down, it goes to the startup sequence but cuts it halfway when shutting down. Weird). I've only traced it down to two things. Maybe the power supply (doesn't have sufficient power?) or the laser is drawing too much power, causing it to shut down (the fan works properly; maybe dust is a major factor?? It's near new clean, so that wouldn't make sense). Would this be correct and is there any way to get either component replaced or fixed? I don't want to let go of this system, due to its rarity (it's a launch model, purchased 5/03/2000). Also, does anyone have a spare disc drive with a powerful disc tray motor? I look forward to anyone's responses.

    Kind regards,

The fault sounds consistent with a bad RDRAM clock buffer, and that's a very common problem on these models. Unfortunately, the only source for the chip is another early PS2 - and there is a very good chance that if you do find one it will be either bad or on the way out, too.

What a shame. I guess it'll be time to cut my losses with this console then, wouldn't it? I was really looking forward to this console being restored. Thanks, TriMesh for the information. I'll keep that in mind for next time. I probably won't get another 10000, 15000 or 18000 series PlayStation 2 since you've said this. It's rather unfortunate.

    Kind regards,

I would put it to one side in case someone manages to find a suitable replacement chip. One of my friends decapped a couple of those driver chips, and the failure cause appears to be electromigration - which is why I avoid turning my SCPH-10000 on :)

I've just been disappointed with the whole thing. I bought it from someone who claimed it was working and fully tested (including the disc drive). That wasn't the case and have resorted to PayPal giving me a refund. Don't get me wrong, I love PlayStation 2's. I grew up with them and have fond memories, but this one seems to be one of those cases where collecting the entire set of PlayStation 2's is one to tred cautiously. Once again, TriMesh. You're a legend for giving me this advice. I'll hold it highly.

I haven't asked actually (in a way I'm a bit curious). I might ask TriMesh if they would know.

    Kind regards,
