I got an idea today and I thought here might be a good place to start. Basically if you don't think company X can make a new game in X series......do it yourself. SO that's what I'm looking to do. Are there any NES Rom hackers that can replace music and totally revamp a game? I also might want some sprite workers.
When it comes to romhacking/homebrew, ideas are a dime a dozen. Unless you're ready to pay serious cash, you'll have a hard time finding capable people willing to create or modify a game according to your wishes.
Come over to Nesdev, every few months we get someone who wants to commission a game project but unsurprisingly they never get anywhere. Honestly if you want something done, you've got to do the hard work yourself or hire people for real. Also most ROM "hackers" don't remotely have the knowledge necessary to develop a new game, which will be a legal necessity unless you can purchase the rights to your game. If you argue that the game won't be for sale and you want everything to be done by volunteers, in your dreams. You also can't just arbitrarily create "sprites" until you have a game engine to work with, and it's constraints understood, with music you mostly can if you use a tracker with a prewritten sound driver.
Doing unofficial spin-offs/sequels to well known games is also never a good idea. And tbh. I've never understood why all these people come to nesdev and wants to hack games to make new games out of them, it will only limit their games. It would be smarter to write it yourself (and as a bonus you will be able to release it legally to the rest of the world).
Yeah my vision is start to exceed what the NES can do. But I have no knowledge of anything programing/art ect. I can really only supervise and write the story. My vist to a Mega Man forum did not yield very good results. the Mod hated the idea and locked the thread before anybody could respond. UGH. Probably Best I do it here.
It depends on how you start, but ROM hacking may get you a final project a lot quicker than programming your own engine from scratch. Plus several people get started in the modding scene just from wanting to make minor improvements to their fave game, and then make bigger changes when they realize what they can do. That said, there's a fair amount of overlap between ROM hacking and actual development. As for legality, well, that's why people use patches  At least that way it has a semblance of legality.
