    Nope, they were not pre-caught.

The special GBA carts actually generated them and then put them onto the customer's cart. Same with the old Game Boy event distribution hardware.

For the old Game Boy distribution events they had those blue boxes with a TV inside. You inserted the Game Boy cartridge into a slot and pushed "A" on a Super Famicom controller. Yep, it was a Japanese controller even here on German events. When it was pushed, a trade-animation appeared on the screen, but it was much faster and one-way.

I believe they used a Super Famicom to distribute Mew and Celebi back then. I asked the staff about the "Original Trainer" setting. They said they can set it when the machine boots or something. The Pokémon's "ID Number" acted like a counter of how often the Pokémon was downloaded already. If you were the first event visitor, your Pokémon's ID was 00001.

I found some old photos on my computer. I believe the Mew one was from NOE's website. I found the Celebi one on some Spanish site if I remember right.

(Note the "POCKET MONSTERS" SGB-like border which is usually only used in Japanese games.)

Very interesting. It may be something that SNES/SF collectors may spend quite a bit of money just trying to find. However, are you sure that was the method used in the US? To tell the truth, I am going mostly on what various people have said (There were a lot of promotions in the US. I know there is a similar machine at the Pokemon Center in New York, though).

Pokémon Center NY was closed a few years ago and has been replaced by Nintendo World Store.

It was? Hmm, makes sense: Allows a wider range of Nintendo products to be sold. In truth, I was thinking back to 2004 with Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen and the pre-release they had.

Really? I thought the Pokemon Center was just integrated into the Nintendo World Store? I've never been, so I can't say. That's just what I assumed happened. Pokemon may not be nearly as popular as it was, but I figure Nintendo atleast has a section of the store dedicated to them.

They still sell Pokémon stuff, but it is no longer called "Pokémon Center", I think. I have never been there, though, so I can only say what I've read.

The whole store of course isn't called Pokémon Center anymore, but much of the first floor is Pokémon and they have "Pokémon Center" banners on the walls.

I hate to revive an incredibly old thread but, figured this was on the same idea as the OP. I was going through my computer & found an old pic that I had saved from IGN awhile back. It's a pic, from Spaceworld 1999, that shows part of the unit that was used to give Mew to the attendees. The interesting thing about this is that it has a brand new sprite, similar to the G/S sprite of Mew but, in the RBY style. If anyone has a better pic of it, that'd be awesome.

Its defiantly not the green or yellow sprite, I know that much. Its using the Super Gameboy template for Pokemon Blue, but it is in total Japanese. Can Gameboy carts even be rewritten to allow new sprites such as this one? Because it is the first time I have even seen this.

I emailed IGN Game Boy to see if there's a larger version of that pic any where. I'm guessing that the cart used to giveaway the Mews had that new sprite & when it went into your game, it had the respective sprite for your game.

Found some other tiny ass pics of the Mew download machine buried in my external HD

I can't remember for the life of me where I originally found them though. The first pic is from Spaceworld as well because you can faintly see the words "Pocket Monsters" on the top of the screen. Might anyone have the Mew pic that was in the OP?

Edit: I found the Mew Download info page from NOJ's Spaceworld '99 website. Translation thanks to Google Translate

NOJ's page on the Mew Download

Wayback Link from Eagb.net from Spaceworld '99 Turns out that the first Mew pic I posted was originally from there but IGN used it as well.
