Seriously though, I would probably quit or call the cops. My brother worked at a bar once that was paying off the Hell's Angels, once you play by their rules they keep fucking with you and never stop.

 

I have a Chinese friend in Boston (Legit friend not online friend) and he hangs around Chinatown there every now and then and there are alot of Triad who run places as fronts and he's quite friendly with them. I'm not sure if he himself has become a Triad or not.

So that's my Triad Connection.

Alot of the Resturants in Boston's Chinatown while really awesome are from what he's told me, Triad Fronts.

Mostly they're involved in Human Trafficking, While prostitution is not legal in Mass by a few legal loopholes it is in Rhode Island, Boston is just a stop to get these sex workers into the state.

there's been alot of hoopla about getting these laws repealed, Prostitution is only legal if done indoors in RI.

 

I have heard that almost every city in Mexico has this problem.

One current scandal is that the governor of a state here said something among the line of "pay the nice gentleman" to a business owner that went to his office to complain. (edit: this implied that the governor was in fact the one collecting from the "protection services" in his state)

It's in fact, very common. HELL, not even for businesses. In some areas, they call you to let you know they're going to kidnap your kids or wife if you don't pay, so you'll have to pay them anyway.

And generally, it's the cops or a politician's relatives.

There was a Dane kidnapped VERY recently in Mexico and the only way he got away was paying 10.000 kroner to the kidnappers. 10.000 kroner is about 25.000 Pesos. Things have gotten so bad in Mexico that most people know someone who's been threatened or kidnapped. For example, in recent memory:

My neighbour, who I really didn't like (but that's another story) was executed by drug dealers because a rival organization was backing his band. They found him in the trunk of his car. His wife had to leave the city, as she got constant threats. I live next to a deserted security house, now.

Some assholes called my father and told him they had kidnapped my sister. They were bluffing, but the recording seemed very real, and if it weren't for my mother, he would have given them a shitload of money. That wouldn't be a problem, but his current health is.

And I live in one of the peaceful areas, too.

The governor of another state buys and sells children for sexual purposes, and when a journalist tried to expose him, he had her arrested and gave express orders for her to be raped in prison. This happened in full view of the press, and there are recordings, but he was still found innocent.

With the government and the police involved, unfortunately, your movie scenario is quite real down here. No Denzel Washington, though. Too bad, he's really hot.

1) If you start a mexican "country music" band (or "Banda") - which makes horrible noise that many idiots call "music" down here, you have to be backed by organised crime, generally drug money, or the radio stations won't play your record. If they do, it's because you paid enough, regardless of the quality of your noise.

2) Someone should make a movie about Mario Marín, now that I think of it. It's almost like fiction when you read it...

3) Many people suspect that the president of Mexico himself is part of a drug Cartel called "Cartel de Sinaloa". I cannot say if this is true or not, but during his administration, things have gone downhill REALLY Fast.

4) My friends who opened a comic shop didn't have to pay protection money at all.

5) You also can't order anything to mexico if it's not via FedEx or DHL, because customs likes you to bribe them - and if you're not there, they simply steal your stuff.

Works like this:

You start a business.

Some nice gentleman from a "business association" comes and offers you "security" for a price. If this price is not paid, you have no security - that being, the "business association" itself comes and kicks your ass / destroys your business.

In other words, they charge you to keep you protected from themselves (Extortion). If you don't pay them, you can't work.

They also do it to cars here, by the way. In many areas downtown, men walk around with hammers (or teenagers with screwdrivers and rocks) and when you park in the street, they come and offer to "look after your car" so that "nothing bad" (Such as being hit with a hammer or rock, or scratched with a screwdriver) happens to it.

My sister had her stereo stolen by one of these fellows, also.
