I just picked up a prototype xbox slim but it seams ive bought a lemon , the pcb inside isnt populated except for the back ports , since i cant do anytihng with it , does anyone know anthing about it , (like what is was used for & where ?)
i can upload you the pictures the seller sent me ive not opened it yet but looking though the slots in the fan grille , it looks empty (im waiting for my screwdriver set to arrive)
There are several of these units floating around for both the matte and piano gloss versions of the slim. Not sure what they were used for exactly but they are 100% unpopulated. The DVD drive is just a shell and there are no components on the board except for the ports on the back. They make neat items for a shelf but not much more. Sorry to hear you got burned. Normally they're sold as non-functional.
Oooh, I cringed when I saw the pics. Yeah, this is just a mock-up, just like the xenon store models. This is nothing more than the Ikea floor displays, only it's the slim. I have two of these. I made the mistake of spending close to $100 for my first one. Second one I bought was far less. I pulled it apart and you are correct, the mobo is blank with only the rear ports, an empty dvd drive shell and a fan shroud (though no fan). Sorry to say, this is not an XDK nor a true prototype.
it was sold as non wokring but i misinterpreted the meaning i thought it meant a broken psu or socket , my own fault really i should have checked how ever as you say they are pretty neat so its not all bad EDIT: Yeah thats how much this mistake cost me XboxSurgeon
They are a weird collectable that eventually will grab some value and rarity. The Xenon store displays are hard to come by now, eventually the same will be with the slim. They are a pain in the ass to open too if you're considering it. They are glued shut with few usable parts inside. There is no sensitivity contacts in the faceplate, the usb door is glued shut, the shell is glued in back, the vents are double glued on. The motherboard looks cool since it's a full version(whereas the old phat displays were not in early models), but there is no resistors, no capacitors, no ports, nothing. Sort of neat, sure. But I too felt that disappointment when I plugged it in (me thinking it was an XDK), and nothing happens.
If you open it up, still care to share some pictures (I almost made a similiar mistake with a ps3, just dint had the money ready was what saved me. but, it would look cool to build a working pc in )
If not, I can upload my pics if I dig mine out. That is if anyone is interested, not trying to hi-jack the thread.
from what you say about taking the thing apart , im going to stay clear of doing that (it'd just me my luck that i'd completely destroy it & wipe out what little value it had) if you wouldnt mind , id like to see thoose pictures
Sure, let me see if I can find all the parts. I used the shell for an RGH with RGLoader a while back. I will find, take pics and upload shortly. Trying to get kids off to school.
*sigh I have yet to find the motherboard. Found the empty faceplate and have the console I put into the shell, but it looks just like the OP's pics. I will keep looking. But since I just moved, it's difficult to say what box it was tossed into.....
Store display Xenons had a chrome eject button but white dvd bezel bit bizarre thing about them. Sorry to hear you paid a bit for it dans
Do these console's have the CPUs on them? If they do and they are unprogrammed, then you can technically program their fuses to be a devkit with a lamprey board or just a UART to USB adapter
These units have no cpu, ram, resistors, capacitors, etc. They are bare PCBs pulled from assembly before being passed into the pick and place machines. Only the port assemblies have been added.
How odd, mine did not have the HDD tray or the connecting cables. Actually seems sort of odd they'd put that in seeing as that HDD connector is held in with one screw and no one would see it anyhow. Cool pics though, now I need to find mine.
