    Rust preventer.

Isn't the shielding aluminium? Aluminium doesn't rust!

I've definitely seen my fair share of rusted metal shielding. Although the last PS1 I opened up had something similar to rust but upon further cleaning and inspection I believe it could have been... Ahem... The former makeshift outhouse of roaches.

True but I think most console shielding is steel. I've seen rust attack the stuff in old consoles stored outside in sheds.

Long ago when I was a Radio repair guy (i.e 1940 ham radios) I used something called "Navel Jelly" rust remover.
The name sounds weird but its easy to find and to use.. Simply add a small top coat, let it sit and wipe it off.

No harsh smells and its cheap. Give it a try.

After that a light coat of mineral oil (more cheap stuff $3 a bottle ) should prevent more rust. mineral oil is not conductive. It's basically what they include in Deox-it spray cans,

Other alternative is painting it. Though that might be overkill

According to our XRF machine, the shielding on a PU-18 is a thin layer of nearly pure Sn over Fe - I assume the inner plate is actually mild steel, but the machine only goes down to Mg, and hence can't detect the carbon.

    Basically, it's tin-plated steel.

IT'S A PS1 with a little bit of rust!! Not an AC Cobra restoration project! Dremmel it, Sand it, WD40 it, Etch primer it, Plate it in gold leaf, Rub your cat on it, Throw the shielding away, Rub a damp cloth on it every 69 minutes for the next 32 months, Lick it, Sniff it, USE MIND BULLETS!! Throw the whole system in the bin and buy another for £2.99 off Ebay. autistic tendencies FFS!!

    THIS IS NOT A PROJECT!

I'm not, I'm amused more than anything. It's a PS1 with a bit of rust, toss it buy another or...

Turn it in to a project an involve the world on the best course of action.

I suggest drawing a template of the shielding and then rebuilding it in carbon fibre and spraying it in candy apple green. Solder in a volt and amp meter and mount flush with the outer case. Add some RGB LED's that are controlled by Bluetooth and react to sound. Put an Audiophile sticker on it! Get it specially made and die cut. Buy those little copper heat sinks and stick them to every chip on the motherboard and power supply also install 3 RGB LED fans with external pot.

Also pedantically worry about the correct fuses in the plug and PSU and the fact the lid button makes a squeak when pressed and how it will affect the integrity of the surrounding plastic. Spend the next 3 weeks finding and researching the correct grease for the button that will not react with the plastic.

Use handheld grinder with brass brush attachment. Then just watch the rust fly. Wear a mask though.

Unless you're emotionally attached to this console, better get another. Or 3 :p

I have a sand blaster, so I'd hit it with that. Then some nice paint to prevent future oxidation.
