Yeah there have been some stuff ups going from 2D to 3D. The 3D Castlevanias, Sonics and Suikodens pale in comparison to their 2D brethren but I still hold that this is because of the gameplay not the perspective. Because as can be seen with MGS, Zelda, Metroid, FF and Mario if the transition to 3D is done right it works.
But I get where you're coming from. With favourite series it can be a case of once bitten, twice shy.
Concerning SCEA and 2D rpg's it seems all is not lost as Atleir Iris: Eternal Mana is getting a stateside release in a month and it features some of the most gorgeous 2D graphics I have seen. Not to forget Disgaea, Phantom Brave and La Pucelle all got releases as well.

Well, my MAIN beef with sequels in series' is lack of continuity. Wild arms 1 was good, Imo, 2 came out of nowhere and had a dumb story and didnt make a lot of sense, 3 tried to tie the stories of WA1 and WA2 together, but still didnt do enough to excuse 2 from ever being made, and was still a pretty good game.

Twilight basically followed the series, but was nowhere near as good as Arc the lad 1 and 2, if you never played them, then do it. NOW! It, and 3, dissapointed me, but 3 was worse. It was a bunch of boring minigames, and one 'main' minigame that you needed to do to progress to the next level, and no real driving force to complete the game at all. You find out whats going on around the last hour of the game, and the only interesting part is when the professor guy accidentally brings the Dark one back to life, and thats the end of the game when you kill him, again! Twilight is better, but the Dark one still only *truly* reveals himeself at the end of the game, again!! He kinda *did* appear near the end of the game in Arc 2, but he was a presence throughout the whole first 2 games, and Arc 2 was the climax, in which he revealed himself after all the evil and death you witnessed by his followers and minions by his evil orders! In Arc 3, some guy just woke him up and pissed him off, and in Twilight, for some reason he is not locked in the mirror anymore. (Something that confused the series even more.) Even though its 2d, Arc 1 and 2 had the most dramatic moments ever in the series. Arc 3 and Twilight don't do the Dark one any justice in his evil dept.

I mean, really. Would you watch an Anime/ movie/ Tv show if the main villain showed up 15 minutes near the end, with no screen time whatsoever until said time? I think not. Thats the main thing about most sequels that annoys me the most.

i have to agree with the quality of sony productx, they have got to be the cheapest shit ive seen...the controller feels too light and like its made of cheap plastic...oh and the new small ps2...yea ive got one...and the lid on it is less sturdy than a piece of paper..they really need to get quality over quanity.....never mind bout shipping million system on launch...make 500 000 good built one and then you wont have to repair a shitload and then raise the price of the console to cover cost of repairs

the 50 times better than Dreamcast comment is twisted, but it stems from this:

in Sony's press releases and in various articles in 1999, they mentioned that Playstation2 can handle 50 times more 3D image data than Dreamcast. this number is derived from comparing Dreamcast's memory bandwidth of 800 MB per second, which is less than 1 GigaByte per second (0.8 GB/sec) to Playstation2's embedded memory bandwidth which is 48 GigaBytes per second. that is the bandwidth between the embedded memory on Graphics Synthesizer, and the logic of that chip. thus, PS2's eDRAM bandwidth is about 50 times more than Dreamcast's memory bandwidth from its PowerVR2DC chip to memory.

Had it been said like GigaDrive says it, it would have been truthful, and, therefore, not cause so much hatred towards Sony's bullshit PR.

Also... with that superiority in bandwidth - the PS2 still is disappointing. Even more so, considering the "power" it's supposed to have.
    Blah.
I still miss having one - some of the software was quite cool, you have to accept.

ps2 is directly crippled by lack of memory.

  8. Err... what do you mean years for Lunar 3? The next installment is being released on the DS sometime in July, if things go well. No, it's not explicitly named Lunar 3, but that's just getting into symantics on naming, there.

Well, WD said they were working on Lunar 3...
I thought it was still going to come out (eventually) after the new DS game.

Sony claimed that PS2 was 10 to 20 times more *powerful* than Dreamcast, when PS2 was first revealed. this had to do with polygon and pixel pushing capability.

the more reasonable factions within the gaming press, said that PS2 would be more like 5 times more powerful than Dreamcast (Next-Generation magazine did) and that because PS2's power would take so long to tap, that there would not be much difference between DC games and PS2 games, initially.

in best case senarios, PS2 outperforms Dreamcast by about 3 to 5 times when you compare polygon, lighting and pixel performance. but when you compare textures and image quality, Dreamcast wins, no contest, in most cases.

Even better than all the technobabble are the 'social implications' of these systems. I remember Sony bragging about how you would first take a picture of your face, and upload it through the USB port to your PS2. Then you'd receive instant messages from friends and family and interact in whole new ways. All new dimension to life!! Yay!

Sheesh, whatever.... It's just a console. And 4 years later, nothing! Still just pop in your game and controller and play.

I think the sad thing is that Nintendo understand gaming the best, but when they say it's all about fun and actually deliver on their promises of innovation, they still get the 1-on-1 polygon-count comparison in all the media. Kinda like politics, if you suck up, you will continue to sit on the first row. If you're too
