everyone fear them, and my old ps2 (1st version ) had this problem. i send it to sony for reapair.... but died soon after. i've buyed a new playstation 2 since, but tried today to repair myself my old ps2. so, i've opened it , and the cover of the cd drive. i've cleaned the laser with rubbing alcohol and cleaned all the case and some of the mobo with it too (did i've made a mistake here?) after replacing eeverything in place , i've hooked-up my old ps2 and pushed the master power button on..... i've waited...and waited.... no lights , no sound , no video signs , nothing. does mobos and rubbing alcohol makes a good mix?
as long as you didnt soak the mobo with the alcohol, you MAY be OK.. no sounds or anything? you mighta blew the MOBO yes.. also possible you fudged your reset/eject cable (white cable that attaches buttons to MOBO
Damn! i got a chance..... and i whanted every chances on my side... i've certainly soaked the mobo....well, no ,i its not the mobo , its the power suply. mobo or power suply , its still fried. :smt022 no way i can repair my fault? DAMN! edit: that's what i've touched with the rubbing alcohol. on the right, it's the power suply , right? (don't laugh at me , im not very familiar with all this!) but why does alcohol and mobo = a bad mix?
Did you make sure the electrical parts were dry, as well as the ribbon that goes to the reset power button being firmly plugged in on both the board and the button, cause it might be loose or bent too much.
so, my ps2 is dead forever? :smt009 i can't make anything to change this? :smt022 well, i have another ps2 , but a second.... :-D
No actually ive done it many times and its one of the safets way to do it, and it would have nothing to do with the ps2 not powering on if thats what your thinking cahaz.
that's not what im thinking , what im thinking is about me soaking the power suply with a q-tips and rubbing alcohol. :smt009
I have heard that using alcohol on a lens actually removes some of the coating rendering it useless... I'm not sure but I thought i'd read that in the PSone manual *scratches head*
yeah, that's what is was thinking, i thought alcohol was the best way to clean any electronic related things. but if its not because of the alcohol , why did it died? maybe i just forgot to replace something too.... i hope.
Did you pull the power supply out? If so it MAY not be reseated correcltly (the 4 PINS need to go into the 4 holes !
ill check this out right now! :smt023 but can it be because of the alcohol? or its impossible? i heard many times that alcohol was the best to clean electronic... eidt: uh, there's something really strang inside my ps2. near the ps2 fan, there's a white 4-pin conector ... i search everywhere , but don't find any loose plug near..... and i don't remember deconecting anything here....uh?
Then i would probably recomend looking for where it goes, cause no console i know of has loose wires, might also solve your probly, just see how far it goes and that should answer where it goes.
i've made a mistake... i see a loose conector ...but no wires. i've searched everywhere, but nothing! like i said earlier , this connector is near the fan and have 4 pins. do somebody with a scph- 30001 and without warranty could tell me where the hell this phantomatic wire come from?
LOL Umm see the 4 METAL "pins" coming off the power supply? they go into that white thing w/o it theres no power!
Alcohol... so long as you didn't use vodka or something, you should be fine. Actually touching the lens itself isn't too cool though, you can fuck up it's alignment. This mostly sounds like you've not got the connectors plugged back in though. When you say it was dead before, was it turning on or not?
Just take it to a game store that has a technician (normal thing down here). Probably some fuse died, or the lens maybe.
