PS2 reads DVD fine, but has trouble reading CD

    I scored a chipped (DMS3) V3 PS2.

The console plays DVD media fine (originals as well as backups) but makes funny noises when I want to play CD media. PS1 originals sometimes load after a dozen tries, PS1 backups never load, audio CD's skip, PS2 backups make a frightening noise.

I tried adjusting the CD poti to 600 ohm, as per DMS3 installation instructions, no dice.

    Any suggestions?

My fat PS2 is in the same state. Bought it used and it was fine at first. Could read burned CDs, and even CD-RWs and DVD-RWs, but after my brother left it running for 48+ hours with a DVD-RW inside, it stopped reading anything but DVDs. That happened 5 years ago, but I still use it to play originals. No problems with those.

Yeah, my story wasn't much of help but I guess you can now try to guess what happened to yours.

Ah, the mysteries of Sony lasers...

Isn't there a diode thing you can install for PS2's? Or is this only for slims??

Considering the fact that it still reads DVD based discs fine, it means it is properly calebrated(X,Y axxiss or in laymans terms the the white cog, and the laser screw on the laser assembly), and not dust causing the problem.

The CD side of the laser is probably on it way out, you can try to lower the pot even more (550ohms max) but judging from the sound of things it wont help much.

"Type B" Where known for being the weakest of the PS2 models, they die quickly and dont generally last longer than 2 years, you can however replace them with a C type, that will last longer, but as far as I can recall a brand new B laser will work better, but fail quicker.

Stop posting if you dont know what your talking about, all laser units have laser diodes, that normally fail, and yes you can replace them, if you have a proper jig to hold the laser in place while doing so,its generally not worth the trouble.

Do you mean the KHS-400B by "type B", and KHS-400C by "type C"? You should never put a KHS-400C in a v3 or earlier console as it will bend and break the ribbon cable eventually, since the drive was designed for a laser which sits lower (the 400B and hence its cable connector sits down lower in the drive than the 400C, which has it set higher); when the laser moves back to read the outside of the disc, it will start to strain the cable and eventually break it. v4 uses KHS-400B too but due to its more versatile drive design it can use both laser types.

    He should be banned

Yes I meant KHS-400B and 400C, we just normally refer to them as B or C types here.

I never had that problem before, just grabed two lasers dead lasers and your 100% right, the bottom is 2-3mm shallower, would that really cause a problem?

Guess you learn something new every day, thank you :)

I think the Diode thing he is talking about is the laser fix diodes, that try to prevent the damage sony's sabotage caused.

Yes, instead of the "excess" of the cable going back down the hole in the drive, it will just hit the back of the drive over and over again when the laser moves back, trapping it at the back, since it will "rest" in a higher spot than it was designed to do, due to the cable connector being located higher on the 400C. Look at those lasers again and you will see that the metallic body is larger on the 400B, and the connector is located at the very bottom of that, so laser cables are going to rest lower on it than on the 400C.

The v4 doesn't have such an inflexible drive design though, so it has no such problem. All later models will read the disc with a 400B but will be unable to eject lol, due to the laser's mass (they were only designed for the smaller HD7/400C).

That was only for the last fat models (v9-v11) and the first slim models (v12-v13), and a quick Google would have shown him that. He's too lasy to confirm anything for himself though.

    Second.

The signal to noise ratio is skewed BADLY because of his posting of useless/incorrect/bad information. Somehow he thinks he can run the PSIO project but doesn't know dick about the PS2 laser.

    Thank you all!

I think I will just get a BBA and load all CD images from HDD with HDLoader, which luckily is on a DVD. An unsatisfying workaround, but at least I can get some of the games like SSX working again. The BBA will cost me more than the chipped system... crazy times.

I will bare that in mind next time I come across a V3 :), there very uncommen here, we only ever saw V4 and above due to ster kinekor releasing the Ps3 latter than the rest of the world...

But that has even less to do with CD read back, but I guess that shouldn't surprise me

I still have a few B type lasers, I can send one over for you but it might actually just be cheaper to track down a V9/10 secondhand ps2...

you know you can launch elf files with a mod chip right?
you can launch OPL from the memory card and have much better compatibility
and the ability to launch games from the network rather then just the HDD

From where do I launch those elf files? Keep in mind that CD will not work.

i think its dev mode 0 or 1 that allows you to launch elf files
you can launch them from USB both memory cards and HDD and DC/DVD

here is where to find the current list of PS2 elf files /apps

    http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=launchers.html
they also have modchip tutorials for launching apps with a mod chip
    and other fun modchippy stuff

i dont use a mod chip i have FMCB
with is an exploit of the old DVD player app that got installed with the PS2 remote

that allows app launching from the OSD

I adjusted the laser to 520 ohm, now PS1 backups load every time. Interestingly PS2 software on CD still doesn't load...

Will this kill my laser in record time, or can I leave it at 520?
