any increase in resistance will shorten the life of the laser
just as a decrease would do the same it creates a strain on the diode

given that you haven't gotten cd based PS2 backups to work
it may already be to late for your diode

I believe the correct term would be "Me Third" :p

I know that. Who likes being correct all the time  gets a bit boring after a while.

Also if you read in the context of how it's written, first, seconded, thirded. Looks right to me.

I was under the impression that the laser had two different POTs for PS1 and PS2 tuning. Or is that only certain PS2 laser types?

Ive been told one POT is for cd media, while the other for dvd media. would make sense... most ps2 games are on dvd's but there are a few (the blue ones) that are on cd's.

When I adjust a laser I start with the angle screws and I can usually get all CD based media working by doing that then adjust the DVD pot from there.

All of the lasers have separate pots. As Cyberghost says, there is not one specifically for the PS1 side of things, and one for the PS2 games; it is just one for CD and one for DVD.

Just commenting... DO NOT FIT A KHS400C laser on a console that had KHS400B because they're MECHANICALLY incompatible.

Only exception to this rule is the "D-CHASSIS", what modchip pirates call "Version 4"...

The effect is the laser pickup crushing the flat conductor cable against the back of the tray mechanism which ends breaking the said ribbon. Also the event of the break of the said ribbon might cause burn out of the laser diode (this happen quite often on the early SCPH-10000 because of it's silver flat ribbon breaking apart) ...

    Thanks for the warning.

But if one changed the flat cable for a longer one it would work, right?

This is what I already wrote about in my first two posts in this thread.

The problem appears to be due to the drive construction of the early models, not the laser cable. In fact a longer cable would just exacerbate the problem as there would be more cable to become trapped at the back of the drive.
