Motherboard revisions of these models are entirely different, so they could use different approaches. Anyway, that's pure speculation, because neither you nor me know, how they were manufacturing them.

And that is interesting, I would like to see difference with my own eyes. Does anybody on this forum using composite connection? :)
I own PS2 (component connection obviously), I started playing Final Fantasy 12 there, and then switched to continue on PS3 - didn't noticed any difference.
I will check that anyway, I am curious now.

The TV itself obviously plays a huge role here. There are TV sets that look absolutely ass with component, and especially in 480i.

If I remember correctly the BC PS3 adds two frames of lag when deinterlacing and scaling the PS2 games. Mind you, that there are TV's out there that add significantly more than this, when doing the same with a 480i component signal.
I used to have a BC PS3, and it looked noticeably better than a PS2 with component cables to the TV I had back then. But that's not saying there's anything wrong with the PS2. If you run a PS2 through a high end video processor you'll most likely get much better results than a BC PS3.

I forgot about the differences in TV, which would make my argument on BC PS3 pictures quality fairly null since I can't compare all the TV sets, I can only compare mine.

That's a pretty cool idea, I don't see it going back in the case though! The only way you can measure temps is if you jailbreak the PS3 and run a temperature application.

A little advice though is to remove those heat spreaders and chuck them. You would get way better heat transfer without them, in fact your not doing much different than the original heat sink to be honest just due to the bottle neck that those heat spreader pose. Its pretty hard to remove them successfully without breaking the system, it's taken me over a year to get it down to a science. I reball BGA boards for a living and have done my fair share of PS3 systems.

the console is but the ram and some other chips that were cooled by the rf shield overheat fairly fast, the ram heatsinks are coming and that should solve that ussue

I'll make a video in a bit I'm not home yet so yea, I'll show it booting to the xmb and the fans running. I can only record with my iPod touch that I got yesterday so the quality should be ok

PS3 still can die if thermal grease under heat spreader dries.

Yeah if you can remove the heat spreaders and get a solid connection between the cpu die that would be big for the cooling. What your doing now is not making any difference to be honest. Those heat speaders are badly bottle necking what your trying to do.

Here's how I remove all of my heat spreaders when I work on my customers PS3 systems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDK9aR_xXrs

You can buy those feeler gauges at pep boys it costs about 5 bucks for a pack of them. It makes a huge difference to change the compound under those heat spreaders with some arctic silver or MX-4 and since your putting those massive heat sinks on the die that PS3 will stay cold.

Also don't worry about those ram chips on the RSX when you remove the heat spreader, just put compound on the die.

PSU need cooling too. Check capacitors inside (careful, discharge PS3 first), maybe they are already have been swollen up.

You need to remove the heat spreaders and get a direct connection between the die of the cell and the bottom of those massive heat sinks you have. Go get a feeler gauge from pep boys for 5 bucks, shave it down with a dremel and cut around the heat spreader and the chip. That will solve your over heating problems!

For the ram, those copper (if they even are copper) HS are too small, Get something taller and don't use the tape they come with it does not help, the tape is just for holding the HS down nothing else.

    Get something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8Pcs-Mem...0?pt=AU_Components&hash=item3f11ee2a50&_uhb=1

They maybe arn't as big as I'd use but thats just a quick search. You can use some that cover more than just the ram package too if hight is an issue (scavenge old PC's for their north bridge heat sprreaders)

As for holding the HS's down use some thermal glue, the cheap stuff will be fine
