I recently got a PS3, and I've been playing it all weekend at home on a rear-projection screen via HDMI. Today I took it back to school with me and tried connecting it to my screen via a HDMI to DVI cable. To my surprise, all it gives me is a black screen. I'm aware that it requires an HDCP compatible screen to work, and my screen is HDCP compatible. Moreover, the system isn't broken. I'm able to get a picture from the composite video cable.

One odd thing is that I don't get a "check signal cable" message as I would if nothing were plugged in. Instead it acts as if the PS3 is plugged in except the screen is black. It even correctly says what resolution it's outputting at: 720x480p. The monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 940MW, and the PS3 is the new, slim 120GB model. I'm really at a loss as to why it isn't working. I guess there could be something wrong with the cable, but it's brand new so I don't see how that could be the case. Any ideas?

Also, I just read on the official PlayStation website that different HDMI to DVI cables work differently, and that the cable may be causing an issue. How the hell are you supposed to know which work and which don't? Could anyone who uses an HDMI to DVI cable with their PS3 tell me which one they use and whether or not it works?

Do you mean turning off the PS3 and then holding down the reset button for 5 seconds? If so, I've already tried that and it didn't work.

    check your video settings.

I ve ran the PS3 just fine over many monitors using HDMI->DVI. Granted, the cable I got was made by a third party for this specific purpose. maybe it does matter?

my PS3 runs through DVI to my dell monitor just perfectly. Even better, my monitor can do 1080p. :)

All I'm using is an HDMI->DVI plug converter and a normal PC DVI cable. Hell my converter plug is a cheap $30 thing I got at a local store.

Well you're talking me walking into a standard big electronic store (Futureshop) that would love to sell me a $100 gold plated HDMI cable (LOL). I'm sure if I went deal hunting I could find one for cheaper. Hell I found one for $25 at Radio Shack but I don't trust parts from their stores anymore.

monoprice.com is great for cables, at least for the US. Not sure if they ship elsewhere..

The quality of some of their parts now a days are really shotty. Hell in canada it's actually no longer radio shack. They were bought out (the Canadian division) and renamed "the source by CC"

In the past radio shack use to be awesome. Hell my dad was a manager of one when I was young. :p

A related question: I'm now using a component cable since I can't get the HDMI to DVI cable to work, and it'll only do either 480p or 1080i - no 720p. 1080i looks pretty good, but I think 720p would probably look better. I know that my TV supports 720p because that's what my 360 is running at (over VGA, though if I remember correctly it works over component as well). Why won't my TV recognize the 720p signal from the PS3, and is there anything I could do to get it to work?

Try the video settings. Go to custom and check 720p and uncheck 1080i.

I bought a HDMI-DVI cable for my ps3 to connect to my Samsung 2233SW which is suppose to support HDCP. But never got it working, tried again the other night and just get a message "Not Optimum Video Mode " and a black screen.

    So I gave up.

Just a quick update for anyone who cares: I found out that I can in fact do 720p on the 940MW, you just have to turn off the TV and turn it back on if you get a "no signal" message. This rarely happens once you get it set up, though.
