things explained for non tech guys http://www.ps3news.com/ps3-hacks-ja...eys-leak-development-clarification-by-wololo/
I wish this will attract more devs so the ps3 can become a emulation powerhouse. Much like the dreamcast was 10 years ago!
That's pretty much been done already. The PS3 uses the same files as the PSP for PSOne Classics. The process to license the content is different on the PS3 so right now we are limited to the content that is available on the PS store. I'm sure someone will figure out how to disable the checks used in the PS3 firmware to load any user created PSOne game.
Man, it really does seem like SONY was relying on the LV0 keys to protect EVERYTHING. Hah, jokes on them.
If psp can run on the ps3 and maybe loads of emu's ill buy a ps3 (dont own any ps3, or parts) but hope sony will make nice new software updates and homebrew also making nice things, so anybody needs to buy 2, to do homebrew/linux things and another to play retail new games LOL
Looks like my dad's gonna have to get his own blu-ray player now... Seriously thou, the whole OtherOS debacle was just so wrong it should have been criminal from Sony's side and since it happened I've just simply refused to buy anything by Sony. Really, what kind of country lets a private law firm representing a foreign electronics manufacturer in a civil suit act like a public prosecutor and have the police raid someone's house? I actually used OtherOS for playing around and as a backup computer when my laptop broke down and I didn't have a backup machine, but after the (failed) attempt to silently remove OtherOS I stopped buying software for it almost full stop. Since then it's basically been stuck at the last firmware version before the firmware that removed OtherOS (3.16) and it won't play any of the games I was genuinely looking forward to when this whole mess went down. I still feel genuinely angry at the way Sony treated me like I was a pirate because I used OtherOS despite I was actually a faithful customer who had owned all of their home consoles up to that and who has never pirated a single game unless it was on an obsolete console and long since out of print or the importer had refused to import it (Megaman Zero 3 and 4).
Yes but in fact "Yes and No", there's a lot of confusion on terminology. Well, the ps3's bootldr is the equivalent of Wii's boot0. (bootldr == bootloader) AFAIU lv0 is the key to bootldr. So when they say they have "lv0 key" they mean they have the "key labeled lv0", not the "key to decrypt lv0". That "key called lv0" is the "key to decrypt bootldr". It's important to note that lv0 was itself encrypted, they dumped it using an exploit, not figuring out its encryption key (kind of a key's key [we could say they "lock-picked" the key's key to open bootldr's door, but the analogy would be lame {nested parenthesis ftw}]).
After reading that ps3news article I've got a few questions, hopefully someone cares to explain. This paragraph is not clear for me. Since I own a CECH-3004A I'm on LV0.2, which means in turn that the LV0 key is essentially worthless to my PS3. However, here it says that any console able to downgrade to 3.55 (IIRC my 3004 can do that) can run the 4.25 CFW. If the LV0.2 is unknown, how can the custom firmware then be ran? Another question: Since someone succeeded cracking LV0, would cracking LV0.2 have anything in common with that?
LV0.2 Checks to make sure what LV0 is saying is correct and if it isn't that is a dead stop. That is why the 3K/4K series need a new exploit to work. As to the comment about any of the systems had 3.55 or lower firmware installed being able to downgrade is, LV0.2 is a hardware add on/revision. So the older consoles don't have that, So the lack of a double check is what makes them hackable. The closest example of the PS3 scene would be the old PSP scene, Where you could hack some units but not others. In order for the 3k/4K series to be hacked you need a LV0.2 exploit period. No one sees one of them coming for awhile, I figure there will be one someday more then likely closer to the PS4 release due to what happened to George "geohotz" Hotz.
Does this effect DVD region encoding? I'd like to be able to play my region 1 DVDs on my PS3, instead of having to use my PC like a chump.
So Installing CFW on specific kind of PS3 will soon be easy peasy because of this ? Sounds pretty awesome. Maybe it can lead to some great things. I'm mostly interested in playing PSP games, emulation and creating custom icons/backgrounds for converted PS1 games. Whoever came up with that SHIT design for PS1 classics should be slapped.
