So the story is, I've come into enough money to buy a PS3, and I've been wanting one for a few months now. It's extra money that I wasn't expecting to obtain, and I am not really hurting for cash right now either. My decision is, get a 40GB one for $399 with Spiderman 3 and the 5 blu-ray movie offer, or $499 for the 80GB one with Motorstorm and the PS2 backwards compatibility. Frankly, although I am sure I will enjoy Motorstorm, I don't really care about it. It's not a deal breaker. However, the PS2 compatibility might be. Before the purchase was pressing I didn't care too much, but now I wonder if it might be a good investment since I own a large number of PS1 and PS2 games and my TV only has one component port (not HDMI). I know compatibility is not 100%, but the majority of the games I own are without problems and I like the idea of the improvements some games see when run via the software emulator. The extra hard drive space I know I can expand myself and 40GB is not worth the $100 alone. I don't really care about the loss of memory card reader or the 2 less USB ports on the 40GB model, I have a USB hub at home and I wouldn't make use of the memory card ports much. Also, Spiderman 3 is not something I care about at all. I own a PS2, I own an XB360, I don't care about the Wii right now. So the option is which PS3 to buy. Is it worth the extra $100? Decisions, decisions. I already have a PS3 controller and Oblivion ($20!) on their way from Amazon, so it's this weekend that I have to decide by. I'm not going to buy a 60GB system because it doesn't offer me anything above the 40GB one other than 20GB and the old PS2 hardware, which I own already. Oh, and I'm not going to wait for another price drop either - I've decided now is the time to splurge.
Depends on how much you like PS2 games. Eventually that laser in your PS2 will crap out. Having the higher end PS3 will allow you to still play PS2 games because of the high quality Blu-ray laser. I'd get the 80gig one....
If you can I'd suggest maybe calling around to some local stores and ask if they have any 20/60GB versions left. My roommate got a 60gig a few weeks ago with an extra game and controller (plus the 5 mail in bluray films) for $450; if some retailers still have these lying around they might give you a better price cut; not to mention that it has better backwards compatibility.
My XB360 is dying and has been for some time. I was foolish enough to flash the firmware, so won't be able to replace it on my warranty. I may buy another unit one day, but not until they sort out the reliability issue. I have a ton of games for the PS2 and want something new. I also like the idea of the network functionality of the PS3, the Blu-ray movie functionality and games are starting to appear that I want on the PS3 (R&C, Drake, Heavenly Sword, GT5 Prologue, etc). I also figure that it might be a good time to get one for the backwards compatibility before it is history (assuming I choose the 80GB model). I don't anticipate Sony will drop the price again before the summer. And you currently get 5 free blu-ray movies.. which are mostly crap, but I guess I could sell or trade in for something else.
I dunno what deals are going on where you are, but the local indie game store to me has the 60GB model used for $400. I'd go for that over a 40GB myself, but I'm getting a 360 first.
Do you still have your shop receipt? here in Holland they trade it for a new one no questions asked, so instead of sending it to microsoft you might want to try your local shop first as they all have the same policy on broken 360's nowadays. If you don't have the receipt anymore or out of shop warranty then you might also try this: if you have a backup of the original firmware flash it back and try and send it to microsoft (you have nothing to loose!) worst thing that can happen is that they see the unit has been opened and they send it back to you without fixing it. Anyway ontopic I would go for the 80gig one, so you don't have any regrets later on.
I'm looking for a 60gb pal starter pack, but yesterday I searched for it on many local shops and didn't find one. Well, I found one, with only one controller and no games included for 599€ (launch price) :crying: If I were you I'd go for the 80gb model too.
I personally am getting a 60 GB model in the mail friday...atleast thats what the tracking number says. I got the 60 GB model over all others because its about $100 or so value less than the 80 GB and does everything the 80 GB version does....only better. The HDD is easy to upgrade as well. So, for about $100 less you get a console w/ only 20 GB less that has better PS2/PSX game compatibility. I think thats the best deal personally. And I think it would be for you as well as you dont care about Motorstorm as you stated. Hope that helps a bit.
PS3 is a waste of money if I may say, there are not enough exclusives that justifies buying the system, I wanted to get one this month but it was just for the sake of owning it more than anything else (like playing) and in the end I got a Wii instead for Umbrella Chronicles. Not disapointed at all. PS3 will become interesting in 1 or 2 years, maybe just for MGS4 but it will eventually get ported to 360 whatever Konami and Sony tells you. Konami will not make a profit on MGS4 if they don't port it elsewhere, Sony will only get the exclusive until launch. The recent debacle of cluncky versions of COD4 and Assassin's Creed are classic example of the failure of the Cell architecture, maybe Bluray is in the fact the best asset they have now. If you want to get it for definite go on, but if you own 360 you will be disapointed, Motorstorm is horribly slow pace, not bad looking at all but not fun.
Aye, reflashing is something I have been putting off, but I should definitely do before I can't I suppose. Thanks for the replies so far. I've decided on the 80GB and I'm off to get it tonight. SegaFan4Life, where did you get your 60GB machine? I can't find them anywhere other than 2nd hand or for crazy prices. In terms of poor ports to the PS3 when the XBox360 is the lead platform, I realise this is currently a problem. However, games like Uncharted, R&C and Heavenly Sword prove the machine very capable in the right hands. Havbing both next gen consoles means I can't lose really. The upcoming Sony funded stuff is looking great and the wife will really like Home when that finally gets a release.
Sony Style has a pretty cool promotion going on right now that you might be interested in. Here's the link for it; http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentDisplayView?cmsId=sony_card Or you can go to sonystyle.com and make your way to the PS3 system listing and there should be an ad for it on the right side. (in case you're weary of my link since you may be putting in sensitive info) Basically, you can sign up for a sony card on their site and use it to make one order before they actually mail the card to you. The good thing is you get a $100 credit back when buying a PS3, plus it's interest free for 12 months. Obviously, I'm not sure if you'd want to sign up for a credit card just to buy a PS3, but it's a nice quick way to save $100. Oh, I just noticed both the 40GB and 80GB are on back-order... so I guess that might be a problem if you wanted it soon.
I'd get the 40GB, spend the change on a component switcher (or just use the same cable on PS2 and 3) and if you want it an extra hard disk. If you ebayed the old HD you would probably still have the change for motorstorm!
What?!? COD4 is about par on both systems. AC is just half ass all around. Burnout due out soon is said to be better on ps3 because its the primary platform. I bet if we went back and looked ps2 launch titles we could cry failure of EE.
