Of course! Scrap mario universe and Too Human right now, we want a sexy menu!

the only thing that could make me buy a ps3 so far is mgs4 and gradius 6. And even if i an big fan of both games, its not good reasons enough to make me buy a 600 bucks machine that i will only use for games, that will certainly have lot of problems in the first year batches and that have a sexy menu, far from that.

And its not because i like microsoft or nintendo better, its just the damn truth. My ps2 will most of the time deliver the same kind of experiences anyway.

Maybe SONY is hinting us that all we have to play with is the Menu until MGS4 appears. Seems very likely,

Thanks for the info indeed then :)

so did Microsoft and Nintendo not copy the upright and horizontal design/position of the ps2? just wondering...

last I heard Microsoft's xbox 1's controller looked very similar to a previous Dreamcast controller design. hmm...

    your points are discredited

    thanks for your contribution

    none taken

one of the most intelligent comments I've read so far. thanks

    Nope, sony did:

And a vertical design is far less important than motion sensitive controller, or a advanced internet gaming society program.

you've got to be joking me. you're taking this a bit too seriously, and way out of proportion.

I could comment on many different ways how this comparison is objectable to your claim. but it's an un-win-able argument.

    ...back to the gui

    This thread is hilarious.

I bet this guy thought this was another "Casual gaming" forum and thought we were full of idiots. He might as well leave because theres no WAY he's convincing us to spend $600 on a system when it firsts comes out just for the "sexy menu".

Actually, he was just countering your statement that things were stolen from Sony, when in fact, they originated from earlier systems. Every system copies something from a different system. For this go around, it just seems that Sony is taking a disportionate amount from other systems.

Ok, back to the GUI. My area of expertise is in HCI/UI and I think that the PSP/PS3 horizontal system is a bad design. For a controller based solution, a typical hierachical menu system is, at the moment, the best design. The PSP/PS3 system has too much space taken up by the menu system itself and suffers from a mixed instance problem; half of the menu is cascading (i.e. you see all of the previous selections), the other half is segregated (i.e. you go into a second screen with no selection history shown). The problem with this is that with an increasing number of system options, you will have increasing confusion about where a particular option is at.

Also, their is no localization of the menu structure. What I mean by this is that in the US, we read and function from left to right, the PSP menu is structured from right to left with the frequently used selections on the right and the configuration options on the left. It is not intuitive for left-to-right readers (imagine using Windows with the start menu on the right and cascading to the left) and should be the opposite. Who knows if Sony will "fix" this for the PS3, but it is doubtful.

I think you guys are being overly harsh on this guy. You verge on sounding paranoid and xenophobic! If someone has a different opinion and voices it then you shouldn't be flaming them, at least that is what I thought the rules were around here. Can't we keep it friendly?

I would like to see a more complex GUI, but I dislike the XBox Live Dashboard so at least they aren't copying that. Sony could use the browser that is supposedly being included in the OS for content and leave the menus simple and quick for me to access, that would be fine. Keep it neutral, even plain looking so that it doesn't clash with game themes and more the better. I want a system to play games on, not waste time navigating a load of options screens before the game will boot up.

Edit: I changed the first paragraph to better word my opinion :)

    Thats what I'm thinking.

After E3 I just can't understand someone actually deep into the gaming hobby pushing the PS3 over the 360 and/or Wii. You'd have to LOOOOOOOOOVE MGS4... like... that would have to be... your sole reason for playing videogames or something. That and Final Fantasy.

    Granted... there's always shmups.com and Neo-geo.com... [IMG][IMG]
So I guess some people just really hate MS and/or Nintendo.

Ok, there are two possible answers:

    1. Hes an "underground" Sony salesman

    2. Hes a Sony Fanboy to the X-treme.

    Take yer pic.

Or you guys are Sony haters and are taking it out on him.

They're all just machines we use to play games. Let's not forget that fact.

Yep, why do we need sexy menus, ability to surf the web, look at pictures, if its all about the games?

Dont get me wrong, I like the PS1 and PS2, because Im an RPG enthusiast, but the blatant trolling and Sony ass-kissing is getting a little old.

Im all for the system being for games, not whole entertainment centers in themselves.

Trying to sell a GAME console by saying it has a sexy menu and can do a lot of pc stuff too is a little dumb.

I'd like to go back to the good ol' days when game consoles were only about games.

We will tell our children that there was a time when men were Men, women knew how to cook, and game consoles were made just to play games and wouldn't do anything if they didn't have a cartridge plugged in. heh

One thing is sure. This topic is boring...

Praising features of a console, months before it's released, isn't something most people will like.

Sony promised tons of stuff for the PS2, including Internet access, BB Navigator, DVR, Downloads and so on. In USA they released the HDD only because FFXI (SquareEnix probably pushed them). I thank the modchip creators, for creating the ATAD Patching, so i can at least use the HDD i want (not the crap 40GB they sold) and to use some of the cool features that indie developers created, like HD Loader, SMS (DivX / MP3 Player).

Let's wait till the PS3 is released. I want one to play Warhawk, GT5 and probably many other games, but it won't praise like it's the perfect machine. Let's not forget Sony manufacturing quality and their "promised" features...

Agreed, if only for a price drop. I don't need all those bells and whistles because I have a PC. I suspect that the multi-media features of the PS3 are Sony's way of making the price more justifiable to Joe public. I doubt it will work though.

I still think Concura's discursive structure is that of a salesman reading from a script, even bot-like. I'd go detailed on it, but nobody wants to read a diatribe on his textual construction.

( I specialise in discursive analysis, by the way. )

He has made this interesting discussion happen, so I guess that's the positive part of him being here... but to me, he still sounds like a "forum marketing" employee.

I may be wrong, he may just be an individual whose sole intent is to evangelise us into Sony-ism, and that, I'd find funny. I'd love to get a PS3 just for MGS4, if I could afford it, but, you see, my Kidney is already invested in my student loan.

Thank you, Concura, but your target demographic is in another castle.

Oh, i thought you were the one bringing the Design argument and such, and that i was the one responding to your divagations out of proportion and seriousness, but maybe i was wrong.

And now that this thread have a happy ending, lets all let it sink!
