PSOne LCD to SCART adapter - question about wiring

The Sony PSOne LCD monitor accepts RGB signals. I would like to connect the PSOne LCD to other game consoles. So I decided to build a scart adapter. Do I just need to wire up the associated pins or are any resistors, capacitors required?

From your location I'm guessing you'd be using a Euro LCD screen, so while it may accept RGB I don't think it accepts NTSC so you may want to check that out before you start any tinkering. The reason I say this is because if I put a PAL game in my chipped PSone the screen is nice and steady, but as soon as I put an import title in - NTSC_U or NTSC_J - the screen begins to 'roll'. The only way around this that I've found is to use the ''iplite'' bootdisc and use the force PAL option but even this method isn't perfect.

I know about this limitation. I will use it for PAL systems only. However before I build such an adapter I'd like to clarify if I can directly wire the connectors.

Given how popular this screen is for making handhelds out of consoles, the benheck forums are probably the place to check if nobody here knows.

I found a useful guide at retroleum:
    http://www.retroleum.co.uk/electronics-articles/psone-lcd-info/

I had the same problem as the guy who wrote this article: I haven't got a picture while PSX pin 6 was connected to SCART pin 20. I had to connect PSX Pin 5 to SCART pin 20, then it worked.

However I haven't used a 100Ohm resistor on pin 10, because it works fine without one.

I used the Sony AV Adapter SCPH-1160 for this mod. The result looks quite good:

    I've attached the pin-out.

when connected to the psone as stock, does the screen use rgb or just the composite feed?

Unfortunately I have problem with the LCD: When connected to a Sega Dreamcast or the N64 the colors are too dark. I haven't noticed that effect on Mario 64, but I noticed it on a lot of other games:

Any idea why this happen? I do not have this effect on other systems (tested with Mega Drive, SNES, PS2).

I've always wondered about that. How common are these screens? Is the modding scene seriously decreasing numbers?

you can still easily get them, but a lot have been abused for modding purposes for sure XD (remeber how expensive LCD's were at the time these came out? PsOne Lcd's were kinda cheap in comparison)

I got my psOne Screen for 3 Dollar. It would have been 6 dollar if i had take the faulty psOne with it... beat that. ^.^

@mdmx: looks like a too weak signal, did you try to use a rgb amp? There are some schematics for those things out there ...

or: did you use wrong / too high resistors?

The image is fine on my tv screen and the pinout is correct. I've compared it with the the diagrams:
    http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/gamescart/gamescart.htm

It's a bit strange because only dark colors seem to be too dark. Look at the first picture showing Super Mario 64 - the colors look great. However if you play a generally dark game (like Duke Nukem 64) it is too dark. I have the same effect on Dreamcast games.

As for the colours being to dark, there is a resistor you can bridge and it will improve the overall brightness.

You can also LED mod the screen.

As for the scart, you can open the screen up and solder wires to the correct pins for use as a S-Video cable.

All of this information can be achieved on the Ben Heck Forums.

could you post a link to a guide, please? I've searched the Ben Heck forums, but I cannot find a guide of the mod unfortunately.

    Sure

I have done the resistor bridge to mine, and it is pretty good. Not too much of a difference but it does help.

For LED modding, follow this guide:

As for the S-Video, here is the link:

DON'T USE SCART! It is bad quality...

Sorry, SCART is better than S-video but the S-video cable it easier to use as it is smaller.

Since your in the UK, SCART is just what you guys use.

However, I meant to say that you should do the RGB mod. That is better then SCART and S-video.

    Sorry.
