So why would you want to install a OneChip modchip into a PAL PSOne when you can also use a universal MM3 chip? Is there any reason why a OneChip would be better?

Playing imports without needing a boot disc...

ONEchip patches the additional region check, MM3 does not.

Any examples of games that a MM3 wont play but a OneChip would? Or is this for all games?

Do you mean does it play all anti-piracy protected games (Spyro 3, Crash Bash) as well?. I'm not sure but im pretty positive that it does.

MM3 in a phat ps1 boots everything. Like I already said, its an extra protection in the pal psone.

    He's right, you need a 12C508A chip.

If I remember correctly, you can use the 12F508 chips instead of 12C508. The difference between them is that 12F508 uses a flash memory, which can be reflashed many times. 12C508 uses capacitors, which can be burned only one time. The rest is the same.

Have you tested that with onechip?

I got them working with mm3 on a PS1, but no joy with onechip on a psone (which is what I was testing when I had all the problems, tried a old style console and worked straight away)

I've tried it using the onechip code, and it didn't work for me. I have no idea why - according to the datasheet, they should be compatible, but they don't seem to work in practice. I tried adding some decoupling caps in case it was more sensitive to noise on the power lines than the old 12C50x chips, but that didn't make any difference. The operating frequency in internal RC mode seemed to be a few percent higher on the 12F devices, but I wouldn't expect that to make any significant difference.

I had exactly the same issue with the 12F50x with the PSone (well, onechip code). Which is why I have said its not worked all this time. I recently tried the MM3 code and it worked fine.
