Haven't posted in a very long time, so sorry about that. :)

Was wondering if anyone has been successful in getting the latest updates installed on a PSX/DESR unit without having the official upgrade disc. From what I have gathered, 2.11 was the last software update available, but Sony stopped the network upgrade service on October 1, 2006 (http://qa.support.sony.jp/solution/S1110278019803/) and stopped sending out upgrade CD-ROMs on February 28, 2014 (http://www.psx.sony.co.jp/support/upgrade7100_01.html).

I've got a DESR-7000 that's at 1.06. Am I stuck on this system software version without finding an original disc?

I know there may not be much of a reason or advantage to get the system software to the last available version, but I'm wondering if anyone has had success in installing the 2.11 update from a CD-R using FMCB, or perhaps somehow redirecting the PSX's DNS to a local DNS server that could host the files to trick the PSX into thinking the Sony update server was still live.

All thoughts and information are appreciated.

Honestly, unless you get one of the official update discs, I think you're stuck. I have no clue if someone was able to get the direct download for the PSX firmware, it would be awesome if they did but I don't know. The update discs aren't impossible to find but they will cost you. If I see any I'll let you know @whoshighpitch

why do you want to update?
iirc there is hidden data on the disc that's not present on the ISO, so booting with FreeMCboot won't work..
Plus booting with FreeMCB probs wouldn't work at all anyway as you are booting in PS2 mode, the update discs are for XMB mode only..

The later software added quite a few features to the PSX LeHaM.

@OP: I thought that the new features only applied to the late PSX models? (i.e. DESR-7700)

Anyway, if you are planning to use the PSX for something daily, beware that its HDD could be near failure due to age and wear. Once the HDD is dead, the console will lose its XMB (and pretty much the point of being a PSX).

Couldn't someone take out there hdd and clone via clonezilla and upload the image? If my memory serves me, clonzilla will clone anything even if it is encrypted.

What good would an encrypted image do?

The problem to begin with, is that the DVRP itself will reject a non-SONY HDD, so it is impossible to stick a non-SONY HDD there. Even if you could duplicate the content of a disk, you have no substitute disk to use. If you use a SCPH-20401 (the 40GB PS2 HDD), then you will lose the DVR functionality of the PSX because there will be no "lba48" region (the region above 40GB is used for storing recordings).

Just to let you know. The HDDs are not made by Sony. My HDD was a Maxtor in my DESR-7000. Sony didn't make the HDDs like the PS2. I just think the PSX drives were encrypted. Also, the disc you want is 1.31 if you can find it.

It's a Maxtor disk, with SONY-custom firmware. It just lacks the SONY-branding on the surface, perhaps because they didn't expect consumers to look at it.
If you want to talk about who made the disks for all PlayStation 2 types, then none of them were made by SONY, but by various manufacturers from that time like Seagate, Quantum, Maxtor etc. All of those disks, however, have firmware that was customized for SONY.

The content on the disk is encrypted, but the DVRP's firmware will require that the disk is a "genuine SCE HDD" like with SONY software on any PlayStation 2 set.

My DESR-5100 already had v1.3.1 on it. It has a Seagate 160GB disk.
I was the one who did experiements on the PSX and posted my results here on AssemblerGames in 2013. My findings are summarized here: http://ichiba.geocities.jp/ysai187/PS2/PSX.htm

Nah, I'm sure that you didn't intend to do that and I never interpreted your post that way. I just don't know if you ever knew about the presently known facts on the DVRP and the HDD unit, hence why I shared.

I actually didn't know about the firmware situation. I do appreciate the work you've done with the PSX though. It doesn't get enough love.

We need someone to crack the DVRP firmware and to decrypt the XMB packages and files. That would solve a lot of problems.
