The files are likely encrypted with DES, since there is mention of the Tomcrypt DES library.

The DVRP is a Fujitsu MCU and its firmware appears to be unencrypted within the older update discs. The SONY HDD check is within it. It is possible that the ID from the SONY disk is used to encrypt the content of the HDD to prevent copying to other disks, so it may not be as simple as NOP'ing out the call to the SCE IDENTIFY function (as in the traditional ATAD patches).

AFAIK all updates added "features" specific to the respective PSX version. For example, the change log for ver.1.10 states "change in the video options menu; improvement of video playback; support of the L2/R2 remote control buttons/DESR-10 analog controller triggers; added MP3 support; added Play Station 2 keyboard support (USB); additional support for Kanji/Kana input and conversion". (see http://www.psx.sony.co.jp/support/upgrade_info.html)

    Update history:
    2004.02.05: V 1.10 (only available for DESR-7000/5000 units)
    2004.03.31: V 1.20 (only available for DESR-7000/5000 units)
    2004.06.16: V 1.31 (only available for DESR-7100/5100 and DESR-7000/5000 units)
2005.05.17: V 2.11 (only available for DESR-7700/5700 and DESR-7500/5500 units; see page 8 http://www.sony.jp/ServiceArea/impdf/pdf/2637166011.pdf) EDIT: For the sake of completeness, V 2.11 is handled as Ver.2.06 and Ver.2.10 for the 7500/5500 series and 7700/5700 series respectively and provides only minor improvements for the VIDEO (dubbing) and FOTO functions.

I assume you own a DESR-7000? Then V 1.31 is the latest possible update (see my link above). I’ve recently purchased the cumulative update disc ver.1.20/ver.1.10 as well as the update disc ver.1.31. While the latest version 2.11 is comparably rare, I don’t think the prices on eBay are justified and it won't work on my DESR-7000 and DESR-5100S.
While you keep searching at yahoo auctions, think about buying additional accessories such as the remote control or the dedicated DESR-10 analog controller which are quite cheap now, i.e. if you are into collecting PSX stuff ;)
