Is anyone disappointed with the quality at which the PS3 plays PSX games? I have an American PS3 and when it plays PSX games, they work fine, but the screen picture shakes very slightly and really really quickly.

It's especially noticeable when a game starts and the publisher logo appears etc "Produced by Squaresoft" etc.

Final Fantasy Tactics as an example, looks utter rubbish. For an expensive next gen console it's pretty disappointing in that respect. PS2 games play fine though.

I am using a normal square CRT telly though. I don't have a flashy LCD or plasma yet like most of you guys. I am using an RGB cable though to get the best quality and have tried changing the display settings within the PS3. I'm not too fussed because I can play them on the PSP, but it would have been nice to not have to keep plugging in the PSX or PS2!

Anyone else experience this or just me?

I can't consider myself a backward compatibility fan. I use every system for the native games rather than having an all-in-one solution mainly because I just don't trust emulation or alternative hardware.
Back to your issue, which version of the console do you own?

Well, PS3's don't seem to have model numbers like previous Sony stuff. It has a manufacture date of Nov 2006 if it helps and is running O/S 1.80.

It's definately a model that contains PS2 hardware... I could blame emulation but since there is hardware inside I could only blame a possible lack of PS1 hardware.

Yeah as mentioned above, PS2 compatiability is perfect. Wouldn't know the dfference. PSX emu is just a bit pants that's all.

Oh well, no biggy, that's what the faithful PSP is for I suppose!

Ps1 seems fine on my system (emulated downloads or games on disc). Maybe its an issue with your tv or maybe not?

My ps3 is a 20 GB launch model with firmware 1.8. As well I am playing on a standard CRT tv (non EDTV/HDTV).

I dont believe ps1 software on usa/jpn units is emulated. It all is running though the ps2 BC much like it does on ps2 units. I say that because Euro PS3 units without the EE has worse compatibility on ps1 games compaired to usa units (shocking since ps1 emulation on psp is extreamly good).

    Ah!

That's better - I've changed the game settings for PS1/PS2 games to smooth. It's fine now!

    Rant over

I'm going to get this out of the way now........
I have NOTHING good to say about the PS3 AT ALL

poor emulation is one of the things.......besides, price, poor hardware design, power consumption, Lack of exclusives, sony cockyness.........

In what sense is the hardware badly designed? That is one of the few good things about the PS3 at the moment IMO.

What GodofHardcore said has nothing to do with the particular topic and could be discussed for months.

You're right and I wanted to get my 1 PS3 bash out of my system even then too much.

Anyways about the PS3 BC, are these European PS3s that are being spoken of?

US PS3s I think have Hardware elements form the other playstations built in
European PS3s do not and rely on software.

    My take.....

if you got a PS3......you should keep your PS2

    that's holding alot back too....

Nothing personal but then why the ***k are you posting in this topic then which is not asking for opinions about ps3. He had an issue and needed some answers.

    -- edit --

If you actualy read his post you would realise he was discussing an american ps3. Second I already stated the difference between usa and euro models.

Yeah really I already said too much.

now as far as emulation goes....

If I got a PS3 (and I never will becasue I have a 360 and slim PS2 and don't really need a PS3) I would only get it for PS3 games and use my PS2 for PS1 and PS2 games.

Depending on what region the PS3 is in BC is either done through the hardware in US and Japanese PS3s or software in the European models.
Another beef I have with the PS3.......

Yet you have a 360 and have no beef with it's poor BC and all games running via software emulation.

Think you're being a little too critical of the ps3?

Why do you feel the need to bring this up again? It was acknowledged within the first 4 posts of this thread.

It's almost like you didn't bother reading and just decided to rant about the PS3 instead.

Apart from Parappa the Rapper failing to work correctly on my Jap PS3 (which ironically works fine on the UK machines...) and a couple of games looking dreadful as they scroll (not sure if this is because of the LCD TV or the PS3) and a couple of games having minor sound issues (although I've not played them on a real PS1 so I don't know if its the PS3), I have not had any major issues with the PS1 compatability, think it's quite good, although could be better...

PS3 made my neighbour lose his hair, really. it's that bad.

Give sony a break, their commitment to b/c has been the most extensive of any company (even PCs:p ) and i admire the fact that they have guidelines for future and existing (and old) software , in order to keep things neat.

Anyway though, PS1 games should be played on a PS1 or PS2 imo =)

I just want them to fix the backward compatability, have options for screen sizes and upscaling within the PS button menu, release a unit so you can use PS1 / PS2 controllers that use the PS control port (I so want to play Jet De Go with the jet controller) and have a turbo load mode.
