LSD might fall into this category. It was a very loose narration. You fall asleep every night and enter a dream. You are free to roam the dream world as you wish. This dream world is different every time. I don't know if it is dynamically generated or not. There are strange visuals in the dream world. You might see a sumo wrestling match, minotaurs pulling carts, a little shack with LOVE written on top of it, a man walking around and all sorts of geographical features. Whne you wake up, you are graded on the dream, filling in a little matrix. You then go back to your house and await your next dream... There are many images here: http://www.autofish.net/shrines/lsd/ I have played the game for a bunch of hours, and I don't think I've seen any of those scenes!
I've played it for around 8 hours so far and I saw most of those screenshot scenes and more disturbing ones as well. This guy freaked me out when I first spotted him because the face actually comes towards you when you approach! Also he's not visible until you face him head-on. There are more scenes with children (or little people?) hanging dead from lamp posts, bloody corpses on the streets, a guy in a warehouse who just shoots you when you approach him as well as the scary girl who's head falls off if you approach her. I also saw long video sequences of mechanics and a kid eating noodles. If you enter the ferris wheel in that one colorful standard world, you will see a render video in which you go up in the sky with a smiling sun and the dream ends. It's a very interesting and absolutely unique piece of software! The graphics are getting very weird the more you play (everything is covered in patterns, first in Japanese writing and later in psychedelic crazyness) and overall the atmosphere tends to become grimmer if you always make the dream end in a bad way (fall down, enter scary objects, etc).
Obvious mention is L.S.D, still ahead of it's time now. God that game has really given me the heebee jeebees some late nights! Being under the influence of psychedelics didn't help things either . Other Osamu games like the alien one mentioned earlier in this thread, and even L.O.L (even though it's a Dreamcast exclusive) are above and beyond any other games I've ever played. Thanks for the heads up on these other games though, I really want to check out Mizzurna Falls now that I know its by HUMAN, one of my favorite developers! Now that I think about it, although not obscure, I consider King's Field ahead of its time in the sense that it predated full 3D first person rpgs like Morrowind. Didn't age well in the graphics department but I still enjoy the original 3 on the Playstation.
I think nobody is going to try to remake a game the way LSD was too....experimental even for today's standart
I actually really wish another LSD would come out. Found out about LSD a few years ago, and quickly became a favorite of mine. Such a unique game.
There's no real language barrier to LSD. Certain "cutscenes" does contain japanese but they don't explain anything that can be described as a "plot".
You can actually pick up LSD at the Japanese Playstation Store right now, or if you have PS Plus on your Japanese account it's Free!
