I've been looking into the Sega Dreamcast. I played it a few times with an old friend of mine back in 2000. We'd play quake, phantasy star, and crazy taxi. Those are the only games I've really had experience with that system. It's getting to the point to where I may just want to say, " the heck with it " and purchase one via E-Bay (since they're no longer in production). Is there a decent USA library of games for that system? Is it expensive? Are the games hard to come by complete (new or used)? Is it even worth it to invest money and start collecting?
Is there a decent USA library of games for that system? Yes Is it expensive? No. But some of the more desirable imports can be. Are the games hard to come by complete (new or used)? Not really. Is it even worth it to invest money and start collecting? Hard to say. While the system has a few gems and some rather good arcade ports (Radirgy and Under Defeat are recent notables), the US library can be somewhat hit or miss. Plus, I find the hardware to be rather fragile and the GD-ROM drive is obnoxiously loud.
I came a bit late to the DC party (although many years before you!) and I really think it has some of the best games around. If you are worried about price, grab a (or a couple) of cheap American DC and a import swap disc. I can't speak for the US scene that well, but most of the games I really love for the system never made it out of Japan. Oddly games that did like Garou mark of the wolves seem to run worse, the GD drive sounds like one of Kains victory animations all the time on one of mate's US copy of the game. Even the most expensive of all the DC games are not that bad, the regular version of Borderdown or Twinkle Star Sprites can be had for a relatively cheap price in comparison to other consoles. The only games that are silly expensive are the rare Japanese Adventure games which I'm guessing you are not going to be into. I say grab a cheap one and all the obvious games, splash out on Under defeat and Mars Matrix and you will think it foolish you did not play these games years ago! + DC is at the point where it graphically still looks damn good, leave it too long and it might look a little dated.
I bought it late, as well, but I'll always be happy for having gotten this gem of a system. By all means, get one. There are many, MANY great games, and now you can get stuff for cheap.
It has a fantastic catalogue of games, is not expensive and a is good system to make a collection. And if at its moment you played Quake III Arena or PSO they still have online servers.
How many games were made for the Dreamcast in the USA? I'm not too interested in import games, just what was release here. How much do they usually go for (games and system)?
How many games were made for the Dreamcast in the USA? Around 100 or so. My advice, stay clear of anything made or published by Acclaim, except for Ferrari F355. I'm not too interested in import games, just what was release here. How much do they usually go for (games and system)? Varies depending on if you buy them in a bundle or separately. A used system can be had for as little as $15 - $20. Brand new around $70 and up. Domestic games are pretty cheap and you can often get good deals by buying your games in a bundle.
My words exactly. I got one about...2 months ago, and I'm LOVING it. Playing the 2d shooters, and more obscure Japanese games has been great for me so far. Now, to start playing some other great titles such as Shenmue soon.
BUY BUY BUY BUY No really the dreamcast is one of the best consoles around. My heavy recomendations are (usa titles) Powerstone 1 & 2, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 1 (2 kind of sucks imo), Shenmue I & II (2 you will have to import from europe), Crazy Taxi & others i cant remember the names to. Dreamcast has one of the best all around librarys and after you get into some USA games I recomend trying to get a few odds and ends japanese games to make you're collection all the better.
Its never to late to get a DC, there are plenty of great games for it, import or not and the only problem is as stated above the loudness of the GD ROM, which I really never even found as a problem. I got mine just for Resident Evil but then soon discovered the joy of Shenmue and Sonic Adventures.... dont even hesitate to get it. EDIT; Oop! Forgot to mention Jet Grind Radio, this game is just amazing, I have an Import and an NTSC ver., Im curently seeking the Japenese walkthrough for it. No luck yet. Seriously dude, this is a great system. But one thing thats certain is that most of its good games are developed by the Japanese.
I'm pretty sure there are more than 100, as I have 80 somehting of them and I can name a few dozen that I do not own. You have now re-awakened my desire to finish my USA DC collection.
The Dreamcast is a wonderful system but many of he best games were Japanese only. saying that though the japanese never got MSR ! AS for the GDROM drive being loud you'll find that all US systems are like that. The early and much better built Japanese systems have quiet fans made of metal unlike the cheap plastic crap they ended up using and Yamaha GDROM drives that are quite quiet. The later systems have Samsung drives. Yakumo
Make that around 220. Here's a list of good titles (games that are generally liked); *Shenmue *Outtrigger *Bomberman online *Quake III *Phantasy Star online or ver2. *Ooga booga *Virtua Tennis 1 or 2 *Soul Calibur *Dead or Alive 2 *Jet Grind radio *Typing of the Dead *Toy commander *Grandia II *Skies of Arcadia *Streetfighter III *Powerstone 1 or 2 *F-355 challenge *MSR *Seaman *Test Drive: Le mans 24h *Various sports games which aren't half bad either.
If you like fighting games at all, definitely pick one up. Capcom gave it alot of loving, plus it's the only console with Project Justice on it.
:icon_bigg I just bid on a dreamcast with 10 games. I forget which, but it's a start. Hopefully I'll win. I was thinking about purchasing a brand new system, but that would just be too much ($70). If I win, I'm on my way to goodness. Is there a complete list of all the games released in the US?
