Questions about DC White Labels

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, May 27, 2004.

  1. I noticed Virtual Alan posting about getting a Space Channel 5 Whitelabel DC disk in the Buy/Trade forum, and it caught my eye as I've never really seen a SC5 - it's the usual rounds of Daytona 2, Quake 3, MSR, Opel Challenge, and a few others that you usually think of when you hear about white label discs. So in theory, there should be a few whitelabel copies for each DC game ever reviewed in any UK publication, right? Well does anybody know if there were any complete whitelabel games that were NOT released in the end? The only two games I can think of that were fairly complete on the DC were Half-Life and PA, what are the odds on whitelabels of those? Or possibly ports from US or JP only games that were pulled from release at the last minute but made it to the whitelabel stage?

Also, I'm sure this has been asked before, but what was the format of games released to reviewers in the US and Japan, and does anyone know why we don't see any of those?

One of the Sakura Taisen(War) games was completely translated so we may have some copy floating around... :smt017 I want it!!!!

  3. Oh man, that would DEFINATELY be one to track down! I wonder if it got to reviewer stage or not, as that might be a little easier to get a hold of than if it were merely kept inside Sega..

By the by koolkid, is this supposed to be a PAL or US release?

I am pretty sure, there are no WLs of Half Life and PA, the only ones I know of which differ from usual releases are:

MSR Opel Challange (more of a demo version of MSR)
The Flintstones - VIVA Rock Vegas (got so bad reviews it wasn't released :smt033)

    regards

Anyone got pictures of the flinstones game?

  7. Hmm, thanks for that. I've heard about Opel Challenge being a sortf of promo/demo/contest disc, but hadn't heard anything ever about this Flintstones game. I did remember someone - belokk maybe - looking for it in the forums, thought "How funny, I didn't know there was a Flintstones game on Dreamcast" and promptly forgot about it. Any idea how common this white label is? I knoe I see Opel Challenge on eBay every so often.

    More than words

I'm a french video game reviewer and I had the opportunity to collect a lot of DC white discs. More, I have the ultimate GD Key disk, the only one able to boot DC GD-R games... You may find a lot of white discs but only a few should contain unreleased games as they were copies of pre-prod master GD. I think there much more unreleased games on GD-R available...

    Re: More than words

There are quiet a few of those discs around and also there is a process of disc swap where you can play GD-R games without any disc....

  11. So then, Sakura Wars in english. Mmmm.

Ok so firstly, is the game good, for those who speak Japanese and have played it?

If it is, then it's worth starting an new mission, now we have PA. So more info if possible pls. Was the translated Sakura on GDR only, or did it make it to white label? I assume if it's GDR only there's gonna probably be only 1 or 2 maybe but if it got to WL stage, there may be quite a few?

But no WLs have made it to Ebay. Hmm, strange. Needs releasing for DC gamers and Anime fans everywhere. Eyes peeled on Ebay then.

    Let the hunt begin.... :smt033

    us review code

US reviewers got GD-Rs 9 out of 10 times. There would be an ocassional white label disc sent but they were very uncommon. US white labels had no printing on the disc. They were completely blank (and silver) on both sides.

    My word............what I have started :smt017

I thought that WL were primarily sent to mags/shops etc to review as GD-R were more in house.

  14. I think it's definatley worth starting a crusade to find out how much truth there is to this Sakura Taisen English bit, and try to get it released if GD-Rs do exist. Anyone have any ideas where to start looking? I'm completely lost as to how people come up with these rare discs, as I have no idea at all how to make the sort of contacts that allow people to get a hold of this gear.

Also, Roubignolo - as you said you have a decent collection of White Label discs, are there any other than the aforementioned Opel Challenge and Flintstones that were unreleased at the last minute? And by the by, welcome to the board, and here's hoping you enjoy yourself and stick around! :drinkers:

I have the flintstones white disk.

As to MSR opel challenge. Its just hte standard MSR demo that is onl lots over coverdiscs. Its not rare at all.

I however have an E3 version of MSR which is quite different.
