Heya guys and gals, this is my first proper post and its regarding the PSX unit that was only release in Japan (I'm sure most of you guys know that already)!

    1) I actually bought a PSX unit (DESR-7500) from a seller via Ebay about 2-3 months ago, still hasn't arrived yet as I picked standard shipping (don't wanna pay those insane prices for expedited rates!) so I'm expecting it in the next 2 weeks hopefully! Anyways the guys says that it can't read discs which must obviously be due to the faulty laser, I'm wondering if this was a common problem in these type of units or do you reckon the original owner was just careless with it?

    2) Coming from the above question will it be possible to install MCBoot on this? You know despite the fact the seller claims it can't read discs, I understand there is a way to put the program on a memory card but how would I go about doing this exactly, sorry if it sounds kinda dumb I'm just not fully versed in this sorta thing!

    Thanks in advance :)

I have two units (7100 and 7500) both with faulty recorder laser (the 7100 still read CDs, the 7500 reads nothing) in which I use FMCB and uLE (micro launch elf) to "bypass" the faulty recording laser issue.

The fact is, the PSX disc drive has two optical heads and two "operating modes". On native mode it behaves so it is compatible with recordable media (it's a digital video recorder and you're supposed to have a method to backup the videos you record, huh ?) so it aways tries to detect discs with the recording head first. Of course that behavior only happens while it's on "PSX mode" and are sitting on the XMB. FMCB boots it on PS2 mode and in that mode the PS2 optical head scans the disc first, making games work about fine.

So, once you manage to run FMCB correctly you should be able to play PS1, PS2 CD and PS2 DVD games at your will. It also works about fine with ESR backups.
Also, because it has more memory than a normal PS2 and the said extra memory is usable by any software you're less likely to have problems while using Open PS2 loader SMB and USB modes for game playing.

The only disadvantage you have is the fact that the maximum area allowed for PS2 software is 40 GB.

Sorry this is slightly off topic

What Stepdown converter plug you got Angle spark?

I have PSX DVR 7700 which I got it on holiday in Japan back in 2005 and yet it never power up once because i didn't have the stepdown plug. I can see you live in united kingdom and so as me.

You have three methods for installing FMCB for the PSX:

    1. Install it via the FMCB installer on the PSX itself, started with Swapmagic.
    2. Install it with the tools from the PS3MCA set.
    3. Manually sign the FMCB KELF on your own with a hex editor, and place it on your memory card as mc:/BIEXEC-SYSTEM/xosdmain.elf.

As for #2, you need to use this script with the PS3MCA tools: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/[t...c-ps3-memory-card-adaptor-120793/#post1116507
The process for #3 is decribed here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...or-the-PSX-DVR&p=727989&viewfull=1#post727989

@Unknown-Organization: Just any step-down converter that outputs more than 80W of power will do. We already told you that in your other thread.
@l_Oliveira: I believe that the fixed 40GB region can be actually adjusted (to be even greater) via software, although the XMB doesn't allow the user to customize the size of that region. However, nobody knows exactly how the resizing process goes, right? That's the reason why nobody did that, since there's a risk of b0rking the PSX.

Thanks sp193; however both links point to the same file. Any chance you can fix the link to the source?
    Thanks again! :)

Having Free mcboot on PSX will be great as it gets but would it change XMB to English instead of Japanese?

Fixed! Thank you for your report.

No. That has to be a separate project, which I will not undertake.

Did you set up the PS3 MC adaptor? If you read the README file of the PS3MCA package, there is a section on "Windows prerequisites for using the adaptor".

Hey sp193 noticed your online. Can't seem to get the PSX script to run properly, keeps saying failed to sign boot kelf. I noticed that FMCB 1.94 has been released if I'm not mistaken, figured I might as well just go ahead and install that. Could you give me a step by step way of doing that, sorry if sounding dumb but really need help with this, thanks :)

Why do not you want to use a method number 3 using KELFTwinSigner v1.00? (Thanks sp193) I used this method and everything went really well.

Don't you need another PS2 to do that? I've only got the PSX

Nah its cool, other downer is the PSX drive isn't working on my unit either. So only option for me is via the PS3 memory card adaptor as Swap Magic is out of the question due to faulty drive.

Via Step 2 I managed to do the format and install successfully on the memory card but the install script for the PSX isn't working for me as I said previously. Keep getting that irritating 'boot kelf' error.

The instructions are still as the same before. Please refer to post #4.

Is your memory card adaptor a genuine Sony one? Clones are known to not work.
