I was wondering, does it have the ability to store a decent ammount of voice work? For example, could a game like Metal Gear Acid have the ability to hold full voice overs? Thanks in advance.

The discs hold 1.8gig. The unit can play MP3(don't know if this is hardware or software though).
So.... yeah I would assume so.

I think MP3 will be loaded on the PSP through the Memory Stick and not by the UMD.

Since the technology is getting advanced (Just read about a new memory stick from sandisk that has 4GB), this won't be a problem. In fact it's better.

I think what Chief Chujo was getting at was that the PSP supports mp3 compression, so the audio wont take up much room.

   )

After reading more about the UMD format, it seems very versatile and is able to handle full movies and games with full voice support easily.I think Konami chose to leave the voiceovers out because a) it saved on time and b) it gives the game the manga comic like approach and feel they(konami) looking for.

MGS acid is looking superb now that I have seen it in motion, though I'll be holding out for it's US release so I can fully understand the game unless Konami do a Substance/integral release of the game in Japan that is.

I'd imagine it uses ATRAC instead of MP3. Seeing as it's a Sony Codec. They both suck balls though. MPC is where it's at when it comes to lossy encoding ;-)

Originally it as only gonna be able to play ATRAC but, thankfully, they added MP3 support.

What the hell is MPC?? I swear there's a new "better then the rest" codec every day and just for the record 192kb MP3's on my Ipod sound fantastic(even 128kb sounds decent enough).

Man, you either have bad headphone or bad ears :) MPC is musepack. It's been around for years... Rather than telling it a bit rate, it decides what bitrate to use to make the music transparent.

    Musepack.net

LAME is ok at --alt preset 192 but why have good when there's better?

Than again I probibally shouldn't start a whole thing here :) At the end of the day it's what you like and what you like using.

    Anyway, the PSP...

Using only Atrac would have been a disaster for this.

Does any one know if it comes with the software to transfer files between your PC or will it just show up as a mass storage device (like a digital camera)?

Also, it think it's safe to say its a software mp3 decoder in the PSP. I doubt they would use up valuable space with a decoder chip - small as they are.

In my opinion, a lack of voice acting somewhat takes away from the experience, especially if they have the ability to do so. Eh, either way, it still looks like a great game.

My MD player uses the Atrac codec, and the sound quality sucks. MP3's don't sound much different than CDs to me (192 and above).

I'll hold out and see if Sony will make a model with a better battery life. Four to five hours of playing games and then switching batteries just doesn't sound good to me.

TBH, the difference between 128 and 196 is hardly noticable. 96 to 128 is very noticable however.

The UMD format is just a plain dumb media to buy a movie on. Unless the movies are going to be playable in a set top box, it's a waste of money to buy it on a proprietary format. What with Sony pushing blu-ray discs so much, I can't see them making their set-top devices to read UMDs. And besides, who would want a movie w/ less features (possibly compressed as well) on 3 UMD discs, or a single Blu Ray with tons more?

    Lol, I hope that's a joke :)

Not a joke at all. Listening to a song in 128 KBPS, and 196 KBPS, there is honestly, to me, very little, if any, difference. Perhaps if it's a speech, but when there is guitars and a bunch of distortion etc. it doesn't really make a difference. No, I'm not deaf, but that's just the way it sounds to me.

    flac
    shn
    ape

and my favs of lossy formats are

I think there must be something wrong with my ears....I honestly can't tell any quality difference between flac and MP3. Plus, I mostly rip my MP3s to 64bitrate and I can hardly tell the differene between that and other rates....hell, all the songs on my Thomson Lyra are 64kbps WMA files.
