I have all my CDs (REAL CDs no crappy limewire or kazaa crap :smt023 ) ripped to my computer at 128 KBPS, in wma format. Sounds fine, coming through my crappy 2 piece toss in speakers. Yes, perhaps through a $1000 speaker set-up there'd be a slight difference, but you can always tweak the settings in WMP10 anyway, so it's pretty moot. All these ridiculous file formats are a pain in the ass to deal with, and are compatible with about 2 players. :smt043

Hmm, i rip everything now to 192k AAC(previously 192k mp3), Which i can't distinguish from my original CD's. 128k AAC and 160k MP3 i can tell in some tracks, but is fine most of the time. I guess different people just have different hearing, the same way different people have different eyesight

The funny thing is, I'm horribly anal about the slightest crackle or ever so slight distortion noise in terms of sound, especially radio. :smt042

If anyone has a decent speaker setup and can't tell the difference between 128 and 192 MP3 then they need their ears testing. I can't listen to 128kbps these days... those nasty high hats just distract me from the music. There's no punch behind 128...

168 is tolerable, 192 is fine, but if I rip a CD I do it to 256. Can't be arsed to do it to any fancy format.
