ive had this CPU for over a year now. tested it no problems but looking for a beast of a motherboard and some ram to make the most of it any suggestions?
Get anything top of the line, as you'll probably be able to find it for fairly cheap now. Or sell it to the member who's looking for this exact processor right now.
it can fetch me a good amount of money. but i want to keep it i just want some motherboard suggestions
Id sell it and buy something more modern - which will out perform it and use less power, while people still value the chip.
I agree with the others: If it's performance you're after, go for a new CPU. That's way more effective than just switching boards. If you really want to stick with your current processor for some reason (like cash), look for some old reviews of high end boards having the right socket, as DefectX11 said they should all be pretty affordable now.
Any good LGA775 motherboard should be fine, look for Gigabyte, MSI, DFI, or some gaming specific boards which normally come with bells n whistles and good for over clocking and media features, then pack it out with some nice fast ram, doesn't need to be expensive just good speed and timings i'd go for the fastest the motherboard will support depending on what you're going to use the system for, it's hard to recommend specific hardware to go with your CPU
I'm not sure how "beast" it will be. Intel only supports 3 boards with this CPU and they are X38 and X48 chipset. http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?ProcNbr=QX9650
high end 775 motherboards are still expensive. DDR2 is also expensive. Buy something like a i3 3250, mobo and ddr3 ram for less money once you have sold the processor and have more performance.
there are motherboards that support LGA775 and DDR3 this one for example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Biostar-P...675830332?pt=Motherboards&hash=item51a5e8863c although i dont know much about biostar, gigabit lan, audio onboard, would just need a graphics card as there's no onboard graphics
This is off the top of my head, but those Nvidia N-Force boards are pretty good. I built a desktop a while back with one, had an active cooler for the sli chip, which was pretty fancy. Check out that line. But yeah, you're best off getting a new mid range processor and board. I thought you were looking to build a PC with that chip for the hell of it. Seeing as you're probably not....
Seeing as my Q6600 still runs games great @ 1920x1200, I'd keep it with a combination of a good 2GB/3GB GPU and last out until the next release of Haswell; maybe overclock the thing another 500Mhz to get a handful more FPS.
I'm still a fan of the core2 era. I had a e6300(1.86) running at 3.00... Paired with the right gpu, it should play any modern game without issue. Don't bother with ddr2, it's too expensive. IRRC the only 775 + DDR3 boards are the nvida 790i boards.
He has a 3.00ghz quad core... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php It's not 'fast' anymore, but it will get the job done.
indeed, my Phenom II 1090T still rocks the kazbah 6 cores of sexyness and DDR3 im running it stock at the min not tried overclocking it yet
I have to show alot of appreciation to you guys for taking out the time with your views and opinions. for the record this is a spare CPU, i have a main system of Core i7 920. just thinking on what to do with the spare C2Q its a high cache CPU thats why i wanted to utilise it but DDR2 is overpriced as hell, and finding boards is still under 100 quid and it does make sense to make a secondary core i3 or a AMD APU. may sell it after all ill be grateful to get whatever i can get for it
