I just picked up the soundtrack for Ridge Racer 4, entitled "R4 / Ridge Racer Type 4 / Direct Audio" from a little anime/toy shop in Albuquerque. However, after buying it I noticed on the side that it said the distributor was called "Ever Anime" and it had a bunch of Chinese characters. It also says this on the case and on the disc. This leads me to think that this is either a Chinese bootleg or maybe just a legal Chinese redistribution of the CD. It has Japanese characters as well, so I'm a bit confused. Can someone illuminate this matter for me?
It could be like the Sonmei discs. They keep the original Japanese text as well along with some Chinese stuff that they add. Yakumo
Yeah, so it seems. I guess I'll have to ask for my money back. Why is it that stores like that never seem to check as to whether or not their goods are pirated? I looked at several DVD's in that store and I could tell that they were pirated because of the poor quality of the printing.
The Japanese soundtrack is out of print and when it does show up in second hand music stores it tends to go for Y5000+ I am glad I picked it up on release now.
I also have a CD copy of the R4 Direct Audio and it's also from Ever Anime, and I bought it from Lik Sang. Are we sure it's a bootleg? It comes with a 10 page booklet in the sleeve and a spine card and all. Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for a pirated copy? Dave.
Yes. Ever Anime is a famous Anime/Game Soundtrack bootleg company. They do come with booklets and often are hard to tell apart from the original at a first glance. I'm not surprised to hear you got it from LikSang, Liksang was also known for selling movie and ps1/ps2 silver bootlegs for years (not online). In the end they got what they deserved, even if from another case. Here is a detailed FAQ with infos on how to recognize the bootlegs and which companies there are: http://www.digital.anime.org.uk/piratefaq.html
Honsetly I think most of these shops don't care really. It's like when I got the soundtrack to final fantasy 7 at a comic con, then notice later on that it had the ever anime banner. I then look it up and was a bit disappointed. What's worse is these conventions and anime shops charge full price for them. I got give credit how bootleggers like ever anime get it done so accurate right down to the booklet it comes with. However they do leave there unprofessional markings such how they do some of their number on their discs.
Honestly, I love Ridge Racer music too, but I'm sure as fuck not dropping 40$ something on it when I could buy real music, so I'm with him on that.
You don't have to and if you want to be a dirty pirate then feel free to do so but admiting it and saying it in a collectors forum is a dumb thing to do, next you'll be saying "Radiant Silvergun $150? Bugger that, wheres those CD-Rs..."
That's so nice of you. For the record, I own nearly 1000 music Cd's. I'm one of the few that actually still buys music, but no, I'm not going to drop 40$ something on video game music. It's tough to buy that shit in the US anyhow. The internet is expensive and riddled with bootlegs. In my opinion if your constantly spending over 20-30$ on video game music, unless it's something really special to you, something is up.
Is there any sound quality etc problems with the bootleg vs. the real thing? Or just some funky artwork? I'd like the Silent Hill soundtacks but all I can find are boots.
I called the place that sold me the bootlegged CD and asked them to give me my money back. They said, "Oh, yeah we know it's a pirate. They're perfectly legal, though." Wrong. Selling pirated CD's in the US is a federal offense. The bastards wouldn't even give me my money back because I had opened it. I thought about going to the authorities, but I decided that it wasn't worth the trouble. The whole thing would piss me off less if: A. They'd give me my damn money back and B. If they had told me it was a pirate when I bought it from them. It's sad that this is often how import stores are in the US. Most of the stuff they have is pirated, and what isn't a pirate is ridiculously overpriced. There are some decent ones on the East coast, though.
