They don't have to. Simply advertise the words PSP, show the Sony logo, and say "it's just like PS2...'cept Portable!" and you're done.

Of course, when they actually get their ass handed to them, they won't know what the hell to do. Which the DS is looking to do right around now.

Lies, damn lies and multiprocessors. Developers rarely get the theoretical possible out of multiprocessor machines. PS3 won't be any different, at least not at launch.

Can someone tell me why Kuturagi thinks PC architecture is nearing its limits?

 

300 mhz, to be precise. However, take it from me that the PS2 is capable of more raw processing than a 300mhz Pentium II.

Anyhow, one thing Kutaragi might be getting at is the discrepancy between CPU and memory speeds, and the amount of logic that can be thrown in to close that gap with conventional CPU architectures - and in that, he does have a point. I don't know how Cell works though (would be interesting to see some more "real" facts)

I'm personally hoping that doesn't happen. The PSP has a lot going for it that the DS doesn't, not the least of which is a large display and optic media.

The PSP is the true evolution of the handheld. It deserves a fair chance and I hope the market and media can see that.

well, a pc isn't a console , you know? a console do not run any programs at the same time of a game, the pc does.

the oddest thing in this is when you compare the ps3 project , to the psx one. the psx was suposed (and is, i think) to be a platform easy to develop , cheap but at the same time technologic.... we are far from this!

Well, that is my point. Not only does a game console not run programs in the background (although this has changed in the latter generations), but also, due to architecture differences the sole use of clock speed to judge performance is pointless. The PSX's R3000A is thrice as fast as a 386 of the same clock speed, for instance.

No matter how much people slag or put down Kutaragi san, he is one of the smartest and most visionary people in the industry.He saved it from near doom in the mid nineties and gave developers and publishers a platform they could rely on again after the jag, 3do, disaster.

Ahem, the industry was hardly in decay in the mid nineties. Developers left Jaguar and 3DO alone because they weren't Sega and Nintendo (and didn't have the financial clout to do a Microsoft). What Kutaragi did with the PSX was genius, for sure, but it's not like the entire industry would have died without him.

And you should listen to Cahaz because it's a discussion forum ^_^
