Near doom? Where the hell did that come from? Visionary? Of what, big crisp stacks of cash? Gimme a break.

The PSX was a step forward, but Sony has reneged on what they originally wanted to bring to the table, with the release of the PS2, and at the looks of it, the PS3. They're goal was to make it cheap/easy to make games etc--but once they got to the top, they didn't need to do that anymore--devvies would dev for their system because of the monetary rewards, so they didn't bother making a system easy to program for.

I disagree. They made the PSX easy to program for so they could get their proverbial foot in teh door of teh games industry....but now that they are well known and the playstation systems are so popular they no longer need to get recognition from dev teams....they need to create powerful systems to keep people interested in the systems....so their focus changed...but its not that htey aren't bothering to make it easy to use...its just not the primary focus anymore.

The PS1 was very powerful at the time, and it was easy to dev for. On the other hand the PS2 is not equivalently powerful to the PS1, given the time/competition. So Sony has retrogressed signifigantly from that point in terms of hardware and design.

Well, keep in mind the PS2 is older than its competitors, whereas it was the other way around in 1994 (apart from the N64 but that doesn't fit in the same group entirely). In terms of hardware design the PS2 is way more original and ingenious than the Xbox and GC, who use stock components mostly.

So what? I could build a "gaming" system out of dog crap, and it would use original components. And all that it could do was sit there and smell like crap. Would it be an original idea? Yes. Does that mean it's good? No. Does that mean it's ingenious? No.

If it works, then improve upon it. Sony's Emotion Engine was a horrible idea.

No but the point the pasta man was trying to make is that the ps2 is an outright original games console with it's own chipset and architecture, unlike the GC and Xbox which are basically just PC's built only for games.

The PS2 is also showing some serious muscle now with stuff like MGS 3 and GT 4.

    Indeed :smt023
My point might not matter to most of you, but I've got a geekish obsession with unusual architectures :smt042

I got his point, just pointing out it's kind of pointless to build a "unique" system architecture if said architecture is crappier than the competition's, and just as expensive or more expensive to produce.

A:Calm down and take your pills.

What did i said that was so wrong to upset you like that anyway? that the original plan for the psx was to be easy to devellop for? well, its true... Your Kutaragi said it himself.

That the PS2 and new ps3 project are Harder and Harder to develop for?
Well, this isn't an opinion, it's a fact. And i don't think it will change with the anounce of the Multiproccesors, it will only go worse and worse for little developers.

When you compare the big multiproccesor machine to the psx, you can say you're far from the original concept: A machine wich is easy to develop for.

I'm tired of you getting Mad for absolutly no reasons, hope you'll understand that this is a forum discusion, not a war starter about the psx.

What I find interesting is that Toshiba is helping to bury its own HD-DVD format by investing in the Cell chip. Sony will no doubt sell a ton of PS3's which is going to be Blu-Ray. My guess is just like the PS2 did with DVD the PS3 will be the first next generation DVD player in most homes. Pretty much setting the standard in the process. Either that or the fight over the format will take a lot longer than it normally would.

If we all agreed, wouldn't it be boring and without a bit of jibing, we don't get heated debates.Sorry if you took that the wrong way, it was a bit strong. But you do have to admit that Kutaragi san is a genius.
