@The Pros: Are hard shell tacos traditionally a US invention? Or did they also have them along side with corn tortillas too?
I always say that a taco that has no meat in it is not a taco. Period. I might be betraying my origins, but quesadillas never held any appeal to me, unless it has meat and then it becomes (or shall I say UPGRADES to) a Pirata or a Campechana. What's this about tacos that only have rice and cheese or some crap in it? Where's the meat? As Xerdo previously mentioned, home made flour tortillas are the best. Whenever I can, I order tacos made with flour tortillas. Sort of related: cilantro salad dressing is so fucking delicious. I use it on everything.
Well, the only meat I eat is fish, and the occasional feast on my wife's meat flaps... but you didn't hear that from me.
Same taste? jk Speaking of fish. Fish tacos are awesome. I just saw a commercial from taco bell that they now have the tacos Evangelion01 described in his original post.
Nah, you have to go to an authentic place, where they make them with real ingredients. There's a small grungy place near where I live that has the beef and chicken slow roasting on a rotisserie all day, uses fresh vegetables, etc. Best tacos ever.
I had the real thing when in mexico and well, what you just said is like calling the olive garden a better version of italian food. True tacos with knife-cut meat instead of just grounded whoknowswhat like you get on the states are awesome. Sure I didn't get the "street tacos" some cheapskates tourist do there right before a severe case of explosive diarrhea, but is not like I went to a upscale restaurant either.
Who gets to say the what the word taco describes? Definitions change. The very fact that something is called a taco means it is a taco. Language can work in reverse, too. like milk and coins
Alecjahn that link nearly had me spitting beer all over!! And yeah, I've had some damned good "real" tacos, but they're still kinda bland no matter what. It's just a very simple and easy dish, that when done right is great for what it is, which is cheap and easy.
Nope, sir, I do not kid. Though the composition of enchiladas varies from state to state, so you might have tried a different place's variation. Where in Mexico did you get them?
And you're from Monterrey, Too! Man, Flour Tortillas are fucking awesome up there. And quesadillas do indeed have meat or other ingredients if you get the Mexico City variety of them, which is VASTLY superior to all other quesadillas.
What I don't like is that a ton of the flour tortillas have wheat gluten. To me, there is a difference between gluten free food and food with gluten. It's not like I'm allergic to it. gluten is just filler
England has basically no mexican restraunts outside london. The grand total of Taco bell's in the UK is.....1!
That's not been my experience, I've come across a bunch of mexican restaurants over the years. We even have one relatively near me in the middle of Wales, which is about as far away from civilisation as you can get in this country.
the best food i ever had in Mexico was the bacon wrapped hot dogs from some street vendor in Ensanada. mmmmmm..... bacon.....
Aah, Bacon wrapped Hot Dogs. Yup, they all are bacon wrapped in Mexico. Good stuff. And tacos' cost varies from vendor to vendor, and according to size, but they can go from 3 to 15 pesos, the regular variety (word of advice: never touch 3 peso tacos. NEVER. Most mexican stomachs cannot take the shock - imagine what it'd do to a foreign one!) , and some other tacos, like "tacos gigantes" or "tacos arabes" may even set you back 30 pesos... but they're fucking huge most of the time. This of course in Guadalajara. From what I recall, Mexico City has cheaper food, and Monterrey is more expensive.
