From the right celebrity, a signature can be worth more than the most expensive game even if it's on your last Wall Mart receipt- but what about signatures of game developers?

Is it generally viewed a plus or a minus from a collectors' perspective when the cart/cd/box/etc. is signed by the director, producer, musician or whatever of the game?

It all depends on the developer in question.

For a name developer, for sure.

    For others? Maybe, maybe not.

Personally, given the option I go for it.

If the game is otherwise sealed and super mint, maybe not, but a used copy will gain some more value.

A game I'd consider a work of art like ICO, NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Rez and such a signature makes it worth more to me if anything for the fact that the devs consider the game something worth signing after the fact.

George Lucas signing an original VHS release of Star Wars...I dunno. Same goes for ET and Steven Spielberg.

If it's for my personal enjoyment I would care less about the value issue.

Yeah. To me there's not much fun in buying signed stuff from other people... I want to have been there when the item was signed! I once owned a soundtrack of Yoshi's Story, signed by Takashi Tezuka... but I couldn't find any interest in keeping it. Firstly, I don't collect soundtracks, but more important: I had nothing to do with it.
For example, I still have a Pro Evolution Soccer 5 PAL demo signed by Seabass (lead creator) although that's pretty much the last thing I would keep, but it was me who let him sign it.
Such things I would never sell. And I wouldn't hesitate to let creators write their names on any of their games, regardless of the market value or if it would increase or even decrease. It's a sentimental thing I guess, as it is to most people.

"having been there" is a good point. I know a record store that partly sells pre-signed albums. Always thought it to be kinda weird...

i got dan aykroyd to sign my copy of new ghostbusters 2 for famicom. Not sure if that boosts the value - but it was for myself mostly. And it was a pretty unique item to get signed.

I think sometimes it's the stories behind the signings that make it special and not necessarily monetary value. I have a copy of the original Colin Mcrae Rally signed by the lead artist who iirc was one of few working on it, so he was responsible for the whole look of things.

I enjoy signed games and consoles - but only really good games that have a history.

A Sonic game signed by Yuji Naka or a Miyamoto signed Mario are great. Some shit like Pariah or Iron Man signed by a soon unemployed developer - no need for that.

I have a copy of Jet Set Willy (with the code sheet!) signed my Matthew Smith, I know it's not especially rare as he signed a few of them but for me it's the joy of owning a piece of my childhood - thus, priceless... well, offer me a million and I'll probably negotiate! ;)

I remember there was a guy on AtariAge that worked with one of the old Intellivision programmers. He had the dude sign a few carts and he tried to sell them. But, they didn't sell very well and he had to eventually take a really low offer.

The point is that signatures aren't as important in games like it might be in say music or sports. But, with every rule, there is an exception. Like if Miyamoto-san signed a copy of New Super Mario Brothers, that might fetch a lot of money.

As far as rare games go, people would just rather have the games. They usually want them as pristine as possible, so an autograph might ruin it for a collector. So, my verdict is that it varies. But, I'm only one person....

    Miyamoto and Naka

I've got a Super Nintendo signed by Miyamoto. The same day, he also signed my wife's original game Boy. For more fun, I've got an European Chaotix signed by Yuji Naka. The French/japanese translator told me after that he said something like "Shit, we've released that in Europe ?". I know Naka didn't work on it but I found it quite fun and original.

Here's a picture of Miyamoto signing my Super Nintendo:

    @Tenchi

It happened in March 2006. Miyamoto came to Paris and received the highest cultural honor from the French government.

A lot of people attended theevent that day and I know he signed 6 or 7 items.

I sure don't want to sell my SNin but if you don't mind, i'd like to have an idea on how you pay for you SP. Roughly. Iremember a SNES signed on ebay that went for something like $2000+

    Cheers
