Oh yes, I'm a big fan of the Layer Section / Ray Storm games so this is some welcome news for me. Better get a few credits on the 360 ready. Just a shame there's no disc release :crying:

    *cream*

I'll probably just play my home copy, though.

    Also, don't have a 360. :p

I'd rather have the original Layer Section as it's one of my favorite Saturn games ever. But are there any details on this coming to PSN at all, or is it 360 exclusive?

That was cancelled a long time ago. Iuchi got burned out on making games or something and just dropped the project.

Yeah, the original Layer Section is a million times better and also one of the few shooters I can't finish! The Saturn Japanese conversion played in Yoko (Horizontal mode) is arcade perfect. Amazing stuff. I remember the PAL conversion called Galactic Attack lacking something.

There is a PSN version coming this Thursday while the 360 version is released this Wednesday.

It's b/c it's amazingly difficult. I assume when you mean finish you're referring to w/ continues?

yep, I can't even finish Layer Section with using all continues. It's just so bloody hard. I have reached the last boss a few times but always run out of continues by that point. I still love the game though.

It is easy in the first five level, and becomes ridiculous hard after that.

Ruldra who posts on my board from time to time has some excellent replays. He says his Mame clock is about 20 hours per game to clear (that's a real clear = 1 credit, no continues). Layer Section was 60 hours when he finally cleared it. o_O

But, to each their own. If you're not really into the genre, or a sick player, I can see how that style of play is a turn off. It gets me hard though.

And speaking of getting hard: sprites + zuntata = win (proper Taito). I will still try Raystorm HD out though.

Zuntata had some amazing soundtracks for Taito shooters. Some of the best if not THE best out there.

Can't say I know SYN Sound Design but I do know T's Music and do like some of their stuff but to my Zuntata have that unique sound that no other game music team can produce.

As long as we're talking about shooter soundtracks, you can't forget Technosoft and the awesome Thunder Force music.

But RayStorm HD...it's nice, but the original RayForce/Layer Section is way better, wish there was a 2D HD remake of that, it would be beyond awesome.

Very true. The soundtrack for the Saturn version of Layer Section makes it so much better than the arcade version. Descending through the clouds with 'Vision' playing at the start of the 3rd level is one of my favorite gaming moments ever. Not to mention the cascading waterfalls on the floating islands on that level, its beautiful stuff.

I've not finished the game either, furthest I've got on one credit is that final boss. As Tatsujin says its when you go through that underground passage level where it forces you into tight spaces when the stakes really go up!

Oh and yeah, never got into any of the sequels. Just don't have the same magic imo.

Hmm... did they change the difficulty in the US version? I've never 1CC'd it, but I can often get to the final boss on 1 credit, and final boss aside I generally don't find Galactic Attack/Rayforce/Layer Section all that nasty.

Tecno Soft were gods at game soundtracks. I am still yet to hear any 2D shooter have a soundtrack that remotely compares to Blast Wind's, and Hyper Duel's music is just amazing.

Arcade or Saturn? Supposedly the Saturn version is easier, and I personally don't have much problems with the first 5 levels or so, but after that..
