Thanks for the advice guys. The prints have been cleaned and vaulted since just after I got them. I have been thinking about doing a transfer for a long time, but the cost seemed prohibitive. I know for sure the DL and Space Ace are the same as what Don Bluth has in his vault. I think there may also be a print of the proto DL footage, but I haven't really been able to review all of the film stuff since I was more interested in protecting it right away. The thing I am more concerned about is the box of 1" VTR reels I have that appear to have raw footage of Whittier Mansion, as well as some of the other unreleased games on them. I work in the entertainment business, so I'm pretty familiar with a lot of the places we use to do our broadcast transfers, but I don't really want to spend thousands of dollars doing transfers at Lightning Media or Point360, particularly if the footage is the same as what's on the teasers on the Thayer's Quest disc. Would anyone happen to have access to a 1" VTR in Southern California?
I'll check with my contact... The facility he works at seems to have every other type of equipment, so they probably have a 1" or two... I can probably get a better rate on a tape transfer than the telecine... As for telecine, they have 2k and 4k machines, but the one with the optical sound pick-up is a 2k I believe. That would only be an issue if there's optical sound on the film of course. I'd be doing the transfer to D-5 (HD) tape most likely, and then down-convert to digi-beta for DVD from that. How many hours of footage (both 35mm and 1") would you estimate that you have? If it's days of footage, then we might want to try to select the best stuff... (I'm in L.A., BTW...)
Got the info: 1" machines are definitely available, and I'm pretty sure I can get the transfers done _VERY_ inexpensively. They aren't really in demand on a daily basis, so machine time isn't as 'noticed'.... Unlike telecine which you might have wait several days just to get into. Bojay- Shoot me a PM if you are interested and we can work out some details...
I have access to an early D-5 machine (early = plays 1080i only, no 1080p), and would love to obtain a D-5 version of the transfers if possible.
