It's "Demonstration Mode 3.01" and I may be able to get the firmware disc that installed it, if that's of any worth. It's locked in demo mode, but that is easily remedied by the L1+R1+Square+Select with code 2310. I'm "afraid" to plug it into the network, for fear of an automatic system update removing "Other OS." I purchased it from the legal owner of the system for a relatively small cost. I was willing to go up to $80, but settled on $75. Pictures: http://imgur.com/a/7CJsM/1#Zpggn [I believe that's the proper link] I'm looking to either sell it [not immediately] or hack it [since I already own a PS3], so, I'm basically looking for info on rarity or anything like that [ie: why I shouldn't hack it, etc.], and felt that this was the only rational place to post. Hopefully I can get some light shed on this.
Seems to just be a retail demo mode ps3 , worth as much as a regular ps3 , with the ability to mod ps3s you can convert it to a retail unit.
Good price in the scheme of things, but not particularly rare. Can be had from around 150$ usually, depending on your luck.
Does anyone have any literature on hacking it over to retail firmware? I'm incredibly afraid to plug it into ethernet, and I'm turning up little results on doing anything more than pirating games with the new hack that's out. edit: took some digging, but to anyone interested: http://psgroove.com/content.php?508...Demo)-PS3-into-a-Fully-Functional-Retail-Unit =]
plugging it into the ethernet won't do anything, although unless you update the firmware (manually) you won't be able to do diddly squat online anyway, unless you really want to use the web browser. The demo machines play very much like the retail machines once unlocked, with a few minor exceptions with friends, etc. I wouldn't flash it to a retail machine as then you end up with a boring retail machine...
I'm not sure if I could anyways, since it's running 3.01 and the hack that's out is specific to downgrading...thus, no downgrading from 3.01 to 3.41. I think it'd just be nice to have a machine dedicated to homebrew without fear of a ban from PSN (ie: emulators and other custom code). My excitement was cut short after realizing that the hack depends on a downgrade, not a complete reflash. At least it seems that way.
There are a few guides over at psx-scene.com that can help you turn it into a retail unit. You will have to use a downgrade stick I believe.
I found a guide, however, the RDU is at 3.01 right now, thus a downgrade to 3.41 isn't possible (as far as I know) I have some friends in management at a local GameStop, however, so I'm hoping to find kiosk upgrade disc.
That's because you'd actually be upgrading to 3.41. Go download the 3.41 update, install, and follow the rest of the guide.
I believe one of the ps3 groups recently released a method for converting a demo mode unit to full retail
