The account was likely legit and never used, however used a very weak password.

For the last few months a forum I run has constantly been under attack by a bot trying to log in as inactive users by guessing weak passwords, for example 12345678.

 

Just a couple questions, how do you tell if someone is a bot? What do you guys do to people who have been compromised by accidently clicking on the links? How can a person get their account back after they get it taken away?

 

If you clicked a link, it's very unlikely anything happened. However, if you think they phished your password, CHANGE IT! Simple. As I said before, it's usually just spamming some crappy shop or something.

How do we tell?

Hardly the model user, anyway. Probably registered just to see a post. If it wasn't a dormant dodgy account in the first place. If the user was genuine, they can contact ASSEMbler and discuss. It's not happened yet.

 

Ah ok. I haven't received one but I was just wondering what to do so I don't fall victim to it.

 

The same thing you do with spam e-mail - don't open it!

You have to be pretty stupid to not know that's spam.

 

Ok, thanks for the examples. I've seen spam stuff on Facebook before and I never click on them. I just didn't know if the spams have gotten to the point where they look legit when they are not.
