It appears the PS3 can also read some of the more exotic disc formats such as SACD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD
However it is only true for the Early (fat) PS3.
You guys came up with some very good points so far.

SACD support is not very good. Because the output is resampled before sending to HDMI. There are better SACD players which don't resample audio before sending to HT.

However it is unique because as far as i know, a 3.55 cfw fat ps3 is the only way to get a perfect backup of a SACD. It can then be backed up as SACD-R and be played on other SACD players which support SACD-R.

I doubt I'll ever own or play a SACD. Not in the mood to research what's been released, nor is my TV's sound setup quite complete yet.

No player on hand either way. Used to have the compatible PS3 some time ago.

How lame is the PS3 that I'm actually more keen on finding a near-new fat PS2 to use HDLoader with it?

Still I can't shake the feeling I'm missing out on great stuff, but then again I thought the same about the X360 and while I had some good times with it at the end it wasnt a must-buy

Well, I´m mostly into Playstation 3 due to the retro and retro-like games it offers. Playstation 3 is actually what got me into Neo Geo gaming so I´d view the Neo Geo station as a nice feature. (Though I am working hard now to get a real neo geo and a library of MVS games)

The whole Vita+PS3 crossplay idea also seems really nice if it takes off like it should. Most things that are compatible, fortunately needs to only be purchased once to be played on both systems. (Though the neo geo games seems like they have to be bought twice, which sucks!)

I have to agree about Uncharted games but only 2 and 3 are really worth playing. But then again Uncharted 2 is so good that it alone justifies getting the PS3. One of the very few modern games that are really worth owning a modern system for. (the other modern games that I like would be Witcher 2 for pc and Darksiders 1 and 2 for any system)

Also, I have to recommend the whole playstation plus thing. Getting loads of "free*" games every month is nice.

*playstation plus comes at a cost of course, but "free" in a scenario where alternatively you would be paying for xbox360 gold membership and not getting so many games with that. Anyways the cost is well worth it.

I´ve had a fat PS3 since the european launch date. I´ve later fitted it with a 120 gig Vertex 2 SSD drive and I love the system. Meanwhile only use for my xbox 360 is to sit next to kids tv and play cartoon dvds. Otherwise it collects dust. I also love shmups though so maybe I should consider looking into the 360 shmups... but so far Dreamcast and pc/MAME are good for that... and in near future I will have Neo geo with Blazing Star too :)

Reading through this thread i learned some good things about the PS3 and discovered some exclusives that i find interesting. Ill know a bit more about what to go for if i buy a PS3 one day. ( I likely will once PS4 is out and PS3s are dirt cheap, Ill still buy a Wii first though.)
Ill definitely get demon's soul, little big planet and God of war 3. I also want Gundam 3 and castlevania games.

The online is free and upgrading the hard drive is supposed to be easy. Some people with way too much cash even put in SSDs.

One advantage the PS3 has over the 360 is that you can watch Netflix for free (assuming you have a subscription to Netflix, anyway). On the 360 you have to have a Gold membership to watch Netflix, which is retarded - they're making you pay more to use something you've already paid for.

Yep, between the instruction manual and a scan of a tutorial online, I had my phatty upgraded in less than 30 minutes, and I was taking my time to make sure I didn't mess anything up.

The PS3 may not hold up to the games library of the 360, but I love how the launch 60 was absolutely loaded with kit.

It's got a handful of really good games (Uncharted, Killzone, Super Stardust, Journey, God of War 3, Wipeout HD Fury), and it's a solid Blu-Ray player, but for me, the biggest selling point is how easy it is to convert a retail PS3 into a Debug unit and turn the machine into a fully fledged Emulator / Media box.

With a hacked PS3, you can run region free PS1 and PS2 games, and select PSP games along with your run-of-the-mill Snes, Nes, Megadrive and Amiga emulators.

I got it because of region free playability. Though the free online is good. The only problem I have is that the model I own doesn't play ps2 games. Other than that it's my media center.
