I was wondering if anyone could recommend something? I tried using the latest imgburn and even though I told it not to install this toolbar (malware), it did anyway AND it wouldn't fully uninstall until I went into safemode on win7.
Yup. That's the first site I hit when I need to set up a new computer for a friend or family member. All the meat with none of the filler, so to speak.
You probably weren't careful enough when going through the setup. IIRC I installed this not too long ago and there were a TON of options you had to untick beforehand. Sneaky. Imgburn is only for burning images, though - it's not burning software per se as you can't just stick files on a disc. CDBurnerXP works, and does ISO images. You can also get a time-limited free trial of Nero. They probably still have a basic free version, too.
They have been there for years.... But yep I also recommend imgburn tho just be careful with those options on install.
ImgBurn has always been my go-to choice (although they haven't updated it in over a year, and the additional crap it tries to install nowadays is annoying, not to mention that pretty much all the recent posts on their forums is asking to remove it). The only problem is when I want to burn things on OS X. The best option seems to be Titanium, but it's still kinda rubbish. I have yet to find a good burning utility for Mac. Hell, the built-in utility is good enough if you don't want Titanium (but as I just said, Titanium isn't that great, anyway). I've never personally liked Nero products, either. If anyone has OS X (or even Linux) recommendations, let me know. Otherwise, yeah, ImgBurn is great for Windows. Not perfect, but pretty damn good.
ImgBurn works very well for burning standard images, but it was never designed for copy protected discs. Most notably, it can only write in TAO, SAO or incremental modes, and doesn't support DAO or DAO/96 at all - as a result, it can't burn user defined subcode. It will also only burn non-standard sectors if the drive supports it in SAO mode - and most modern ones don't. This is most noticeable when you have a cuesheet that specifies a track as being in "MODE1/2352" - the old drives would typically write the sector data exactly as it was specified in the image, even if the header, L-EC or ECC values were wrong. Most modern drives don't do this - they just take the 2048 sector payload bytes from the data and recompute everything else. For most things, this behavior doesn't matter, but if you are burning a track that's really mixed-mode but has been flagged as mode1, it can result in serious corruption.
I don't believe it's been stated, but Alcohol 120% also isn't bad. I use both IMGburn & Alcohol 120% pretty much in conjunction. If I encounter an error or lack of compatibility with one, I immediately utilize the other.
I use CD Burner XP most of the time. It has worked for me so far, and most likely will carry on like that in the future.
Did you have an unusual drive setup? Alcohol 120% installs a module called SPTD to give direct drive access so that it can send low-level commands to the burner that aren't supported by the OS. Unfortunately there are a bunch of edge cases where it can just break your machine.
