Remakes

Discussion in 'Off Topic Discussion' started by Grace Saunders, Dec 7, 2005.

  1. I'm very against remakes. Some remakes of old films are decent, while some others are plain bad. Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most memorable cinematic shockers of all time. However they had to go and make a few crappy sequels, a forgettable prequel and then a remake.

Now Anthony Perkins made the role of Norman Bates his own in my view and it's horrid that Hollywood thought they could emulate the character. They cannot leave a good thing alone. King Kong was a classic and then they done a remake with Jeff Bridges. Now they've made yet another remake directed by Peter Jackson. The legacy of Godzilla has also been damaged by a remake that wasn't necessary. As if that's not bad enough, I noticed they're ready to film a remake of the Stephen King collaboration, Creepshow. What beats me is, why would anybody want to do an update of such a great film? I mean, there's some movies you just cannot do ever again, especially in this era.

Now I understand that technology is very tempting. I mean, as a kid you often wonder what those cool childhood favourites would look like with modern graphics and stuff.
I mean they've done it with so many video games, such as Resident Evil for example. They kept all its original feel and improved on it, without taking away any of the creepiness that made it so intriguing back in 1996 or whenever you just got around to playing it. Now if they did this with Silent Hill as well, I'd be more than impressed. But until they do, I'll be glad I have the original. 1999 was so long ago, but the game still feels like a gem to this day. I just hope the movie has the same trademark Silent Hill moments intact.

Then there's the TV shows that refused to die for several years, like Angel and Buffy. Now Buffy was very interesting at first, but eventually it got rather silly and it was hard to follow. I continued to watch the episodes, but I was increasingly annoyed at how bad the stories were becoming. Then Buffy died. But she came back from the dead. This in my opinion was rather pointless. I think it's safe to say that creativity is gone with the people in Hollywood. They ought to think of something new instead of going through archive material.

  2. I agree with you there, I'm really getting sick of Hollywood being unable to come up with anything original so instead they revamp dead franchises in the form of remakes or unneccessary sequels. Very few are ever as good as the original, although I must admit I am looking forward to the remake of "The Producers" coming out in 2 weeks. I loved the original, and the new one has Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick starring in it, who have been doing the Broadway play for quite awhile now. My sister saw them in the Broadway version and said they were fantastic, so I'm looking forward to it.

Also, it has Uma Thurman in it, who looks incredibly hot as always

Hmmmm I am really fond of the Japanese comedy called "shall we dance". But Hollywood made the remake, The Grudge was scary in the Hollywood version, sadly I have never seen the Japanese version.

La Femme Nikita rocked in the French version, but I am not really fond of the Hollywood version.

I liked Batman, and Batman Returns, since it has the "Frank Miller" film noir style in it, I hated Batman and Robin, but thought Batman forever was "ok" , and not a bad movie.

Batman The Beginning is great, and it has some serious Frank Miller darkness in it.

When I saw Daredevil I saw a Frank Miller material being fucked to pieces. So no I don´t think the Daredevil was a good movie, X men and X men 2. Were great movies. Elekra was an ok movie. Spiderman was good untill he got bit by a genemanipulated spider , then it was boring. So I removed that movie from my harddrive, and pushed forward to see how shitty it was,
    before I deleted that file.

Sometimes the remakes are good, sometimes they are utter shite. And no I am not going to see the Hollywood version of "shall we dance".

They changed a ton of the storyline for the Silent Hill movie, like Harry isn't the main charectar, it's some girl. Noooooooo! Don't ruin Silent Hill!!!!!!!

Who remembers those poor Disney cartoon remakes  ? My uncle got Le Roir Leo (The Leo King) mistaken for Le Roir Lion (The Lion King), and was disappointed when he bought the tape and went to watch it with his family.

Some remakes are a bit okay, like the Star Wars epsiodes 1-3. I myself am no Star Wars fan, but I have to say the remakes look a lot better than the old releases.

  6. Uh oh... better hope there aren't any hardcore Star Wars fans on here...

  12. That reminds me, where's all the martial arts movies these days?

  13. I hear ya there. It really seems that there haven't been too many releases as of late, although I'm sure there are a lot made that those of us in America never even hear of.

To top things off, Jet Li just announced that his upcoming movie "Fearless" will be his last martial arts movie. Such a shame, I always enjoyed his work too.

  14. I'm slightly angry because some industries seem to be psychic too. They stole my ideas.
I often wondered if they would ever do a Godzilla game where you get to throttle the opponents from the movies. Then they made it, but my favourite monster wasn't included. Now I've been waiting patiently for nearly 8 years for a sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer to be announced and now that it has, I'm a bit disappointed because it won't have Julie or Ray in it. Infact, its plot description has convinced me that the third entry will be a remake or an unconnected story, which is not necessary considering those movies were fine the way they were.

  16. Jet Li killed them. At least Chow-Yun Fat still makes some decent ones. Crouching Tiger is pretty awesome.

Heh, I saw the preview for that tonight and nearly wet myself laughing. I haven't seen the original movie or the Broadway show, but I'm definitely going to see The Producers when it hits.
And speaking of Broadway to film, I saw Rent on the big screen tonight, which delivers a serious crushing blow to the idea that remakes of any form are inherantly bad. Of course, the movie featured all but two of the original cast members, so it's hard to go wrong there. The film was missing a few small (and in my opinion, forgettable) scenes, axed no doubt in the interest of keeping the thing under three hours, but was still amazingly done.

See also: Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom Of The Opera in 2004. Coming from someone who's seen both plays on Broadway, the movies are really well done for film conversions.

You knowsit. And this talk of martial arts and Uma Thurman makes me want to watch Kill Bill again. Tarantino is a god among men.

  17. Jet LI? Deeeeeeeeeeewd. The One was great. Sure beats the hell out of another Steven Segal or Chuck Norris movie.

The New Police Story was released on DVD here in Japan a few month back. That's actually pretty good. Well worth picking up. Then there's Kung Fu Hustle which is a kind of comical martial arts movie.

  19. Kung Fu Hustle, there's one that no martial arts fan should be without. Stephen Chow is absolutely hilarious.
