geelw huh... I'll have to work some magic on that fool! :)
I'd be very curious to see if they could successfully translate the humor.

Excellent, I was looking for a topic that dealt with this.

I've been watching RaH1 on the Xbox since they first announced, saved up the cash, and then it never got its USA release. Despite being fully translated.

The versions that got out in English were the journalists copies, so I take it some people here have it? What's it like? And how would one go about acquiring this holy grail of rare unreleased Xbox titles. I know several others who are equally interested.

    EDIT:
That doesn't mean it won't get a UK release though. I've heard some rumours that 505 Street Games, an Italien company that publishes titles in Europe, is contemplating taking this of AIA's hands and releasing it in the UK, in English, as a budget title.

But damn, after playing the MD and DC version, I am dying to see this thing in English.

I doubt it very much. Japanese humor is like British humor in a way. Basically only funny to those who are natives or understand the humor. By that I mean, when I watch some, no, most American comedy shows I find them completely unfunny. THe only one that was ever of any interest was friends. So, I'm not saying these shows are crap (well they are to me), just that the humor doesn't translate well to none Americans. The same goes for some British comedy such as Red Dwarf or Black Adder. Anyway, I found Rent-a-Hero very funny but I can't see it ever being funny in English. It just wouldn't work. And you just know they'll throw in some stupid crap like "Dude" or what ever.

If they're TV shows, chances are, they're not that funny in the first place. The only show that ever made me laugh my balls off was the Simpsons during it's golden years. Seinfeld was also funny if you like the rather ridiculous stuff. Just about everything else on TV is crap.

Yeah, the Simpsons is funny and always has been but I don't really count that since it's animation. In Japan we get some right shitty US so called comedy shows on NHK. All of them are terrible. The only thing I watched was E.R. and even that's finished now :( There's a word going round that Sex in (on) the City will be shown on NHK soon. Not that I'll watch it though. My wife or if you can still call her that, rented them all on DVD :(

It takes quite a bit to make me laugh. It's either that, or 99% of "comedy" is crappy. I think it's the latter.

On the topic of Rent A Hero, I saw a few screenshots. The English translation looked terrible ("Engrish" I believe is the correct term). They'd probably have to clean it up a bit if it were to be released here.

The few translated dialog screenshots I saw seemed ok to me.

Oddly enough, there's still a whole section devoted to Rent-a-Hero (complete with trailer) over on xbox.com
They even have the release date listed as Feb 2004 with a price of $29.99. :(

I just watched that Xbox trailer. It looks identical to the Dreamcast version. I wonder if they still have the "Creamcast" in it :p or the images from the original Mega Drive version at the start? Or even if the main character still wears his Mega Drive T-Shirt. It would be interesting to see.

You live in Japan Yakumo, how much does the Japanese Xbox version cost over there? Has it been dropping in price like I hear many other Xbox games have?

    I don't see why they wouldn't.
I think the XBOX version of Shenmue II still has some of the older Sega console gatcha figures.

ANyway, seeing how Headhunter Redemption did eventually get a stealth Xbox release last year (by AIA, the company that did RAH), perhaps Rent a Hero will get a similar release nearer to the end of the xbox's life cycle as sometimes happens when companies are looking to release some quick and easy product.

i am not american and iunderstand american humor :S, and for the translation, they can include a 1000 page book with a more detailed translation xD, they did that with the furi kuri american dvds

  17. I love how the assumption is so quickly made that non-Japanese (in this particular case, American) audiences will be utterly unable to understand the no-doubt amazingly sophisticated and Mensa-level Japanese humor. Of course, Americans, Brits, and other nationalities living IN Japan are excluded from this, as they are obviously tuned into that mystical Japanese vibe that simultaneously makes everything there funny and puts comedic entertainment from other parts of the world to shame.

If I recall, it was a similar sort of almost racist, almost xenophobic, flawed logic that prevented Super Mario Bros. 2, Final Fantasies 2,3, and 5, and a whole slew of other games from ever being exported initially - "The uncouth idiots out there could not handle these games!!"

To answer your question Yakumo, I read something about a "Creamcast" in the EGM review I have.

I agree with GSL's post. The generalizations tend to be a bit too frequent sometimes. Just earlier I read something about "stupid white boys" (or similar).

  19. Oh, the white boys thing was just Eva-01. With the horrifically mangled grammer and missing punctuation, it was hard to take that sort of thing to heart, really.

Nope, they were all removed from the Xbox version. You can only find them in the DC version.

Yakumo: Watch Sex & the City. It *IS* funny but not like normal comedy. It's funny b/c it's about four over-the-top psycho bitches that do nothing but bitch about men. The girls like it b/c they can relate. Men like it b/c we know we're always one-upping them.

I think my favorite one was when Miranda flipped out about a guy she was dating taking a leak in front of her. At the advice of her friends, lightened up on the subject and even popped a squat in front of him. The next day, he's spraying the bowl and completely carries out the back of it with a fart... at which point, the relationship was over.
