As I sent these pics to ataribuff a few days ago I realised I never found any info on these... I once grabbed this rental version of NHL for the PSX and the box is official too as for the cover it only had a xerox of the original game. I had seen games for rent before but never a specific rental version of a game! I dont even know if these exist for other systems, if any of the PSX ones come with complete covers or manuals etc I though it would be interesting to make a thread about it! Show your rental versions and discuss!
When I worked in HMV we got 100's of those PSX games in hard cases. Not may came with instructions however a few did and others had a single sheet of paper. They aren't worth bugger all to be honest. The ones we had just had not for Sale on them but the looked the same as your disc. Yakumo
Don't the rental versions cost more than the normal versions? Why would any company want to resale the games if they cost more than retail?
Well the point of having that on there is that Rental stores are not really supposed to sell on the discs after renting them. It is also to disuade potential thieves from selling them on. Nobody pays attention to that though.
i have quite a few rental copies of games which i picked up from a blockbusters a couple of years ago, some of them do look quite nice in the cases, and there were a couple of games that were only ever released on rental in the uk, that never had retail releases
Some of the SNK fighting games were like that (Samurai Shodown 3, King of Fighters 95 and Fatal Fury Real Bout I think), as was Toshinden 3 or 4 (I forget which).
toshinden 3 i have on rental, but i think you could also buy that retail, i think 4 was rental only, as for other games ill see what i can dig out, there was a couple of obscure rpgs as well if i recall, but as i said it was a few years ago and not sure if i still have many of them left to be honest
The Rental versions cost a lot more then the retail versions, they made Neo Geo cartridges look not too bad. Although reminds of Video Tapes in Japan, which were sold as Rental and Home Use too, they did cost in excess of £40 to £80 each (at the time of 180 Yen exchange rate) which was fun, when you tried to explain why 2 episodes of Anime X was so expensive.
sweden had megadrive rental games with different (but official) box and cover. Cartidge was the standard retail one though. Need to find a pic.
Back when i had a psx i rented a game a week or so. 50% of the games i was given were rental ones. While the otheres were just normal ones. The rental titles mostly came in that sort of package and im pretty sure most had a normal cover on them. Also the shop used to sell them off once the games got abit old/they dint get rented much.
Rental only games have always interested me a bit such as ClayFighter 63 1/3: Sculptor's Cut for the N64.
Does anyone collect the rental slip art? I remember when I had a night job at a rental place, the covers we got for Pikmin 2 used different art than the regular retail version. I'd be surprised if that didn't happen with other games too.
Sorry for my lack of replies but my main PC died and I havent spent much time on the web since... Lots of great info here, I didnt know there were this much rental game types/boxes/covers/etc The few games I rented were the standard games with a sticker on top,the cartridge ones even came in a VHS case lol And as this thread's creator I have one demand, PICTURES!!!! xD Show me your rental games!
AWESOME!! Even if they're just modified VHS boxes it still looks great! Much better then the crappy cardboard boxes the retail games have ( I hate games in cardboard boxes, they get so damaged and scuffed) Those covers/inserts even look more organized than the retail ones! Any chance you could take a picture of the spines? or even some full insert scans? :icon_bigg
