I've got a genuine Nintendo branded SNES Australian AC adapter, come to find it doesn't actually work, no power comes from it to the console. Has anyone ever experienced this? What might the cause of the issue be? I'd try opening it up and taking a look inside, but it's got some screws I've never even seen before!

Possibly, I tried checking connectivity with a multimeter, and didn't get anything.

I've got the same thing on an American SNES power brick. No voltage output either so it isn't a regulator issue the thing is dead, Jim.

Not sure how to crack it open without breaking it either.

I actually did this yesterday. The tool for opening them comes in most universal bit sets and looks like this....

And its called a "spanner bit"

Man, 36 pieces in my screwdriver set, and not a single one of those :\ I'll try a set of pointy nose pliers like Pikmin suggested, might have a bit of success :D

*EDIT* Damn, my pointy nose pliers are not, well, pointy enough :\

Every Bunnings should have them or Dickhead Electronics should too. Every set I buy it has them.

As stated by Hexigon, Bunnings is the key. The smaller Kinchrome set has them.

I actually went back to K-Mart, where I got my previous socket screw driver set from, and brought a new one. Aside from having four sizes of spanner bit, it also had more bits than my old set, the handle has a plastic tip (no more raw palms!) and I don't need to stick on an adapter to insert either one of my Gamebits or any of the bits it comes with! It's also a ratchet screw driver, which totally wasn't mentioned on the packaging! Win-win all around!

So, I've gotten the PSU open, and here's what's inside. Uh, is it suppose to look so... Greasy? :\

That'd be awesome, thanks! On a side note, there's an awful lot of empty space inside these power bricks, you could totally smuggle blow or something in them if you so desired.

desolder wires, use blade to cut the sleeve down the seam. Cut wire past the break, strip and solder back onto transformer. Put sleeve back on and glue it back together.

    done

Eh? Broken wires are a common fault with these AC adapters then? I'll try a connectivity test on each wire and see if there's any breaks.

Ok here's what I've found so far:

    Wall end
Connectivity though both wires to both pins (obviously, the wire with the direction connection has a stronger connection :p)

    Console end
Connectivity when I stick the probe into the plug, but not when I touch the probe to the outside of the plug. My understanding of these plugs is the inside is positive or negative while the outside is the other one. Sound like a broken wire to you fellas?

PAL SNES adapters send AC at the console end. There shouldn't be positive or negative.

It doesnt matter what it sends, if there is not connection then its broken. Cut the cable and test until you get a connection on both, then resolder it back in
