http://www.thomasclulow.com/2009/07/13/rescuing-a-soft-modded-xbox-using-the-hot-swap-method/ This might be of some use.
Sadly, with this method you are required to hook up a WinXP directly to the Xbox HDD via IDE cable. I don't even know what is installed on your Xbox having never noticed it before I sent it (as I mentioned, I had 50-60 Xbox units here of varying states of repair, spares and running). I tended to ensure it worked and then set it aside and moved onto the next one. Things like soft / chip mods I wouldn't notice unless I had either needed to open the unit up or fix something. I've never really been into modified Xbox units so perhaps someone else knows of a way to do it without opening the unit up. That said, to open the Xbox is a 2 minute job and if it resolves your issue might be worth it.
The auto-installer will install a hacked dash/soft mod. if you want to restore it you needto have a copy of the original, untouched MS dash. Boot into the modded dash, connect via FTP, delete all the dash files and then copy the unmodded files over. This should work, but if it doesn't then you can always boot off an exploited save, connect via FTP and do the same thing. If your system is not booting you will need to do as the link suggest and open the box. -hl718
thanks! I have both dash original and hacked (unleashx). Default stats with original MS Dash (some time crash), and pressing L1+R1+start+select switch to hacked dash. What I must delete to restore it? No need to reflash tsop?
If it is softmodded then the TSOP is stock. No need to flash. To restore you'll need to delete the *entire* contents of the hard drive and replace it with a clone from a clean Xbox. -hl718
Not the "factory restore" disc that ocassionally pops up for sale. That resets the system settings and clears out the cache but it doesn't reinstall the OS on a blank drive. His best bet is to find someone else with an Xbox, load an exploitable save file, start Evo-X, connect via FTP, dump the Xbox hard drive to disc. Now go to the other Xbox, load an exploitable save file, start Evo-X, connect via FTP, delete the hard drive contents and then copy over the retail drive files. Shut down, reboot and enjoy. -hl718
The easy way if you ask me is just swapping out the harddisk with a retail one, I think mannnny people here should have original xbox hdds laying around eating dust as they were swapped with larger ones. I know you dont want to open it, but why? is the xbox version that special or are you not convident openen stuff?
I really think its a bad idea, its meant for chipped xboxes, and the uninstall thing will ruin your softmod probably.
Ditto that. Without knowing *what* softmod was done it is impossible to "safely" remove it sans a complete wipe and reinstall of the drive contents via FTP. Step 1) Get a hacked save and corresponding game Step 2) Connect via FTP Step 3) Wipe drive contents Step 4) Copy over factory clean install Step 5) Reboot Otherwise, you have to open it and follow the steps in the link that was provided earlier. Using any sort of "automatic" tool on an unknown box risks rendering it into an unbootable state requiring further work. -hl718
MrHard: I think there is some confusion in this thread about what a softmod is and what it does. Softmodding is the process of modifying certain files on the operating system of the xbox which allows you to execute unsigned code. i.e. EvoX or game backups, etc. TSOP flashing is the process of rewriting the Flash contents which is where the Xbox Kernel is stored. It is unlikely that if you (or whomever modified your console) used a softmod that your system has had its TSOP reflashed. This is good because it saves you the work of reflashing your original flash contents. If you do not have a clean backup of your hard drive in its Factory state, you need to acquire one. Like hl718 suggested, this can be done by finding an Xbox, running an exploit, and copying the data off of the unmodified Xbox to your computer (Drives C/E in particular). Then once you have the files, FTP into your modified console, delete everything, then copy the copy the backup from your computer to your modified console and reboot. This should drop you back into the original dashboard. Or you could purchase an unmodified console for about $30 now I believe.
Like CHero said, use Slayers Auto Installer. It has an option to restore to stock. I've used it on a few occasions, and can confirm it does work on a softmodded Xbox.
bump Heres the story, I just got a hacked Xbox gutted from some arcade machine. After the splashscreen the greenled changes into orange and It boots intoan Xbox-like dashboard with a couple of crappy games to choose with fmv previews, I can bring up a menu with some info, nothing can be changed on this menu though. From this menu I can tell it has UnleashX0.26.0119A located on E Has partitions C,E,F,G,Y,X and Z and FTP is active. I dont really know anything else about this machine or how to proceed, I never dealt with modded Xboxes. If I insert a DVD it boots the dvd instead of the dash. I would like to get rid of all this crap and have the original dash (region free) and have an alternate dash if possible but I have no idea where to begin. Can anyone help me? Would this Slayers Auto Installer be safe to use in my case?
