While I await for the pico fuse to be delivered that I ordered, I decided to fix that yellowing of my SNES plastic. Most of you should already know about RetroBrite, if anyone needs the full formula and instructions I can post that later or give link of youtubers that I viewed. I am trying out Baking powder instead of OxiClean. I found that the active ingredient in OxiClean that is used for the RetroBrite formula is in Baking Powder and Backing Soda but in an even higher concentration than in the cleaning product. It is also much cheaper to use the baking products over OxiClean. I will let everyone know how it turns out. It has been raining almost every day, so very little uv sunlight to do the trick. The little bit of yellow on the top of the SNES case was almost completely gone in just a couple of hours. I am also thinking of painting my case. It has already been chipping and breaking, and I was thinking of buying a good case to preserve the original state of the system. Then, I can paint the old breaking case to be creative.
There's some good information in the thread here, I think you should consider posting your results. http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/my-first-attempts-at-retr0bright.57755/page-4
I think you are a bit confused over the chemistry - the primary active ingredient on those "active oxygen" bleaches is normally sodium percarbonate - the main component of baking powder is sodium hydrogen carbonate (aka sodium bicarbonate) - they are not the same compound, although they are related. Oxy bleaches also normally have a small quantity of an activating agent in them (generally tetraacetylethylenediamine - abbreviated as TAED for obvious reasons) that helps the percarbonate release its excess oxygen. Note that TAED also does the same thing to the excess oxygen in hydrogen peroxide. If you used baking powder rather than baking soda, then you would get a foaming effect (because the bicarbonate will react with the acid components in the baking powder) - but most of the gas evolved would be CO2 and not oxygen. It might still just about work, but its certainly not going to be as effective, since both the percarbonate and the TAED have important functions.
Just link to the site: http://www.retr0bright.com/ Note that it's not as good as people say. It WILL re-yellow! And you could easily damage your precious items.
